Devotees continued to throng Gorakhnath Temple in Gorakhpur on the second day of the new year, turning the temple precincts into a bustling fairground. Pilgrims queued patiently for darshan and enjoyed the attractions at the Khichdi Mela, while temple authorities and local police maintained a visible presence to ensure safety and order.

Khichdi Mela Gorakhpur: Arrangements and crowd management

The temple committee introduced separate barricading at the main gate for male and female devotees to speed up the darshan process and reduce congestion. The move has helped maintain a steady flow of visitors throughout the day and prevented bottlenecks at entrance points. CCTV cameras monitored the grounds and police personnel conducted regular patrols to respond quickly to any issues.

Queues moved in an organised manner with devotees entering in single file for darshan. Stallholders reported heavy footfall, especially at shops selling traditional adornments and household items. Several vendors noted that demand exceeded the capacity of their staff at peak hours, leading some to call in temporary help to keep up with sales.

Family attractions and fairground highlights

The mela offered a range of attractions that proved popular with families. Children and young people were particularly drawn to the food stalls and amusement rides. Long lines formed for the tower swing, Columbus wheel, dragon ride, boat swing and smaller animal-themed rides. Programmes such as the Jalpari performance also drew crowds and added to the festive atmosphere.

Organisers emphasised that public health and safety remained a priority. In addition to surveillance cameras, volunteers and temple staff were stationed across the fair to guide visitors and manage queues. The visible security presence reassured many pilgrims and helped maintain a calm environment despite the large numbers.

Upcoming Makar Sankranti observance and ceremonial offering

Temple officials said Makar Sankranti will be observed across Gorakhpur on 15 January. Dr Pradeep Kumar Rao, a member of the temple management, confirmed that arrangements are in place to accommodate the anticipated influx of devotees. He added that the Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, is scheduled to offer khichdi at the temple in the early hours of 15 January, continuing a tradition said to date back to the Treta Yuga.

While devotees may also offer khichdi on 14 January, the temple management has prepared additional facilities for both days. Officials urged visitors to follow the guidance of volunteers and security personnel to ensure a smooth experience.

The Khichdi Mela Gorakhpur brought together devotion and festivity, drawing families and pilgrims alike. With careful planning and heightened security, the temple authorities managed to balance the spiritual needs of worshippers with the practical demands of a large public gathering.

Key Takeaways:

  • Khichdi Mela Gorakhpur attracts large crowds to Gorakhnath Temple following the new year.
  • Temple committee organised separate barricading for men and women to streamline darshan and manage queues.
  • Security measures including CCTV surveillance and additional staff were deployed across the temple grounds and fair.
  • The temple will mark Makar Sankranti on 15 January with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath offering khichdi in the early morning.
