Thousands of residents and visitors gathered at Sati Radhika Park in Guwahati on New Year’s Day, creating a lively atmosphere that stretched across the city’s popular riverside green space. The park, known for its riverside promenade and cultural displays, attracted families, young people and senior citizens who came to celebrate the first day of 2026.

Guwahati New Year crowd draws families to Sati Radhika Park

Organisers estimated the turnout in the thousands, with steady footfall from mid-morning through the evening. Visitors enjoyed the park’s open spaces, seating areas and vantage points overlooking the Brahmaputra. Local vendors offered snacks and hot beverages, while informal musical performances and street entertainers added to the celebratory mood.

City police and park authorities said they deployed additional personnel for crowd management and traffic control. Senior officials reported that movement around the park remained orderly and that there were no major incidents. Temporary signage and marshals helped guide visitors to entrances and parking zones, easing congestion on adjacent roads.

“We planned for an increased turnout and applied additional measures to ensure public safety,” a municipal official said. “Our teams coordinated with traffic police and sanitation staff so that the event could proceed smoothly.”

For many attendees the gathering provided an opportunity to start the year with family time outdoors. Parents said they appreciated the open air and the range of activities available for children, including play areas and a seasonal fair that featured local crafts. Photographers and social media users captured the crowds and river views, sharing images that highlighted the city at leisure.

Local traders welcomed the influx of visitors. Stallholders sold regional snacks and handicrafts, and several small cafés near the park reported increased takings compared with a typical day. Tourism advocates noted that such events contribute to the local economy by supporting micro-enterprises and drawing visitors from nearby areas.

Transport authorities advised motorists to expect delays on key approaches and to use public transport where possible. Bus services were increased on popular routes, and temporary parking arrangements were put in place to accommodate the demand. Officials asked visitors to follow directional guidance and to refrain from littering to maintain the park’s cleanliness.

Environmental stewards at the park arranged additional waste-collection points and urged visitors to use them. Clean-up teams worked throughout the day and into the evening to return the grounds to normal. Park management said they would review the day’s operations and adjust plans for future large-scale gatherings.

The New Year turnout at Sati Radhika Park reflects a broader trend of public spaces in Guwahati being used for community festivals and open-air recreation. As city planners consider future programming, officials said they would maintain a focus on safety, accessibility and measures that support local businesses.

Visitors left the park in the early hours with positive impressions, describing the atmosphere as festive yet well organised. With the event passing without major disruption, local authorities and community groups said they view the turnout as a constructive start to the calendar year.

Key Takeaways:

  • Guwahati New Year crowd drew thousands of visitors to Sati Radhika Park on 1 January.
  • Authorities reported smooth public order with traffic management and safety measures in place.
  • Local vendors and families contributed to a festive atmosphere, boosting local tourism.
  • Organisers called the turnout a positive start to the year for community events in Guwahati.
