India Launches Home Library Initiative in Kalaburagi to Boost Reading

Kalaburagi — A new drive to promote reading at home was launched in Kalaburagi this week when the Kannada Book Authority established a household library at the residence of education enthusiast Rajshekhar Choudhary in Shahabazar Naka. The event marks the rollout of the authority’s “home library” scheme designed to revive reading habits among children and families in the district.

Home library initiative reaches Kalaburagi

Speaking at the inauguration, Vijaykumar Patil, president of the district KASAP, noted that modern life places heavy demands on children and that leisure hours increasingly favour screens rather than books. He said the home library initiative aims to provide a simple, sustainable remedy by making books accessible within family settings and inspiring parents to introduce reading as a regular activity.

Rajshekhar Choudhary, who serves on the home library awareness committee, emphasised that the scheme relies on local leadership and household participation. “A library need not be a large public building; a curated collection of books at home can spark curiosity and creativity in young readers,” he said.

At the event the district Kannada Sahitya Parishat presented several titles to be added to the household library. The gesture underlined the collaborative nature of the initiative, which brings together government bodies, literary organisations and community volunteers to distribute books and advise families on building balanced reading collections for different age groups.

The inauguration drew a wide range of attendees, including district KASAP secretaries Shivraj Andagi and Dharmanna H. Dhanni, advocate Vinodkumar J.S., Afzalpur KASAP’s newly appointed president Prabhavathi Metri and committee members Paramānanda Sarasam, Jayshri Choudhary and Basavaraj Sajjan. Their presence reinforced local commitment to the programme and signalled plans to replicate the model in additional neighbourhoods.

Officials stressed that the home library initiative is not a one-time distribution of books but a continuous effort to cultivate reading routines. Volunteers will work with households to recommend age-appropriate titles, organise small reading circles and encourage children to record their reading and write short reflections. The authority said it will monitor early take-up and gather feedback to refine the programme.

Education specialists at the event highlighted research linking regular reading at home with improved language skills, concentration and academic performance. They recommended that families set aside short, predictable reading periods and mix fiction with non-fiction to broaden children’s interests.

Local leaders expressed hope that the home library initiative will help bridge gaps in access to quality reading material, especially in neighbourhoods where libraries or bookshops are scarce. Beyond immediate literacy outcomes, organisers said they expect the programme to strengthen community ties as residents share books and ideas.

The Kannada Book Authority has indicated that Kalaburagi will be among the pilot areas for the scheme, with lessons learned informing a wider rollout across the state. For now, organisers are encouraging households to volunteer as home library hosts and for local groups to contribute gently used books to expand the programme’s reach.

As the scheme takes root, organisers will report progress and consider partnerships with schools and youth organisations to integrate home reading with classroom activities. For parents and neighbours in Kalaburagi, the initiative offers a practical route to rediscover reading as a shared family habit and to give children an early advantage in literacy.

Key Takeaways:

  • Kannada Book Authority inaugurates a home library at a reader’s residence in Kalaburagi under the new home library initiative.
  • The project aims to nurture reading habits among children by bringing books into homes and encouraging family-led literacy.
  • Local officials, literary figures and community representatives donated works and pledged support to expand the scheme.
