A final-year Computer Science and Engineering student at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad) has received an exceptional pre-placement offer worth Rs 2.5 crore per annum from the Netherlands-based global trading firm Optiver, making it the largest package the institute has reported since its establishment in 2008.

IIT Hyderabad placement breaks institute record

Edward Nathan Varghese, 21, will join Optiver as a software engineer in July after completing a two-month summer internship with the firm. His offer follows successful completion of the internship and a pre-placement recruitment process that, according to reports, saw him chosen over another intern who had been shortlisted for the same role.

Varghese told media that several factors contributed to his success, notably the reputation of the IIT brand, a rigorous and supportive academic curriculum and his decision to concentrate on coding and competitive programming from the very first year of his engineering course. He said the combination of institutional support and personal preparation made him a strong candidate for a competitive global employer.

Details published about his academic background show Varghese was born in Hyderabad and schooled in Bengaluru from grade seven through the end of higher secondary education. He performed strongly in national entrance examinations, securing a notable position in both JEE Main and JEE Advanced, and later achieved a high percentile in the 2025 Common Admission Test, according to available reports.

Beyond his personal achievements, Varghese has been active in the institute’s placement infrastructure. His LinkedIn profile indicates he served as head of the career services office at IIT Hyderabad, supervising eight student managers and leading a wider team of roughly 250 coordinators across placement and internship activities. Prior to that role, he coordinated the internship cell for about 11 months.

The offer from Optiver, a firm known for quantitative trading and technology-driven market-making, underlines growing demand for software engineers who combine strong coding skills with an understanding of quantitative systems. International firms have increasingly looked to India’s premier technical institutes for talent capable of contributing to complex trading systems, risk models and automated strategies.

For IIT Hyderabad, the record package will be a point of institutional pride and a signal to prospective students and recruiters alike. High-value offers attract media attention and can strengthen an institute’s placement records, helping to sustain or improve its attractiveness to both students and employers.

While headline packages draw attention, campus placement officials often note that median and mean salary figures, the distribution of offers and the number of students placed across sectors are important indicators of overall placement health. Nevertheless, a standout international offer demonstrates the global opportunities available to Indian engineering graduates and highlights the role of internships and early career leadership experience in securing top positions.

Varghese is scheduled to join Optiver in July and will take up responsibilities as a software engineer. His success story is likely to inspire current and future students at IIT Hyderabad to couple strong academics with practical experience and active participation in placement activities.

Key Takeaways:

  • IIT Hyderabad placement sees a record Rs 2.5 crore annual offer to final-year student Edward Nathan Varghese.
  • The pre-placement offer came after a two-month summer internship with Netherlands trading firm Optiver.
  • Varghese credits the IIT tag, curriculum and early focus on coding and competitive programming for his success.
  • The achievement enhances IIT Hyderabad’s standing in international tech recruitment.
