Singer Sonu Nigam said the 1997 hit Sandese Aate Hai transformed his professional identity during the launch of Ghar Kab Aaoge, a principal track from the forthcoming film Border 2. The event took place on Friday in the Tanot area near Jaisalmer, on the India–Pakistan border, and was attended by Border Security Force personnel as well as the film’s cast.
Sonu Nigam Border song resonates with soldiers
Addressing the assembled BSF jawans, Sonu recounted recording Sandese Aate Hai in 1995 and explained how the song and the original Border film established him as a serious vocalist. “This song, this film, this team has been a very auspicious team for me,” he said, adding that the track gave him a new identity and made people believe in his capabilities.
The launch of Ghar Kab Aaoge was staged near the Tanot Mata Temple with fireworks and a programme that opened with a rendition of the Rajasthani folk classic Kesariya Balam Aao Ni Padharo Mhare Desh. The emotional tone of the evening underscored the film’s patriotic themes and drew loud applause from those present.
The reimagined Ghar Kab Aaoge has been recreated by Mithoon, with fresh lyrics by Manoj Muntashir Shukla; the original composition was by Anu Malik and original words by Javed Akhtar. Vocals on the new version include Roopkumar Rathod, Sonu Nigam, Arijit Singh, Vishal Mishra and Diljit Dosanjh, blending established voices with newer textures to evoke the film’s mood.
Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan and other members of the Border 2 cast travelled to Jaisalmer for the launch and witnessed the audience’s strong reaction. The producers and presenters—Gulshan Kumar, T-Series, J.P. Dutta’s J.P. Films, Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar and Nidhi Dutta—were credited at the event. Director Anurag Singh’s film features an ensemble led by Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty and is scheduled for theatrical release on 23 January.
In a social media post accompanying the song, Sonu Nigam described the experience as a “beautiful homecoming”. He wrote that some songs are more than melodies and belong to the nation’s soul, dedicating the performance to soldiers and the families who await their return.
Industry observers noted the choice of the border venue as significant for publicity and symbolism. Staging the launch at a frontline location amplified the film’s themes of sacrifice and service and allowed the cast and musicians to directly honour serving personnel.
While Border 2 draws on the legacy of its predecessor, the launch suggested the production hopes to connect nostalgically with audiences while presenting updated musical arrangements. For Sonu Nigam, the occasion was both professional and personal: a reminder of a career-defining song and an opportunity to perform for those the music seeks to honour.
