The Odisha government has instructed its vigilance department to investigate 125 corruption cases reported between April and December 2025, senior officials confirmed on Friday. The directive was issued after a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who reiterated the administration’s zero-tolerance approach to corruption.
Odisha vigilance probe reveals wide-ranging seizures and convictions
The state vigilance department recorded 202 criminal cases in 2025 and arrested 212 government employees, the Chief Minister’s Office said in a statement. The department also filed 49 disproportionate assets cases and uncovered assets valued at approximately Rs 120 crore.
Officials said investigations led to the seizure of 153 buildings, 714 plots, 12 farmhouses and 18.3 kilograms of gold. Financial assets seized during the period included bank deposits of Rs 36.69 crore and cash totalling Rs 8.81 crore. The vigilance wing reported that it disposed of 488 cases after investigation and achieved convictions in 108 matters.
“The state government has never assigned such a large number of cases for vigilance probes in a comparable period,” the CMO statement said, underscoring the administration’s drive to enhance accountability in public service. Chief Minister Majhi told officials that the time had come to build a corruption-free Odisha and that firm action should deter government employees from engaging in corrupt practices.
The fresh instruction to probe 125 cases signals a stepped-up effort to examine allegations swiftly and thoroughly. Sources within the vigilance department said teams will prioritise cases with significant financial implications and those involving public officeholders, while ensuring due process in each inquiry.
Legal experts note that a concentrated push on corruption probes can improve public confidence if investigations are transparent and prosecutions are pursued promptly. Convictions and asset recoveries are frequently cited metrics of effectiveness; the department’s reported 108 convictions and extensive seizures will form part of the government’s case for its enforcement record.
Observers say the scale of the recent probes may also prompt closer scrutiny of internal controls across departments. Strengthening audit mechanisms, improving procurement transparency and enforcing stricter disclosure rules for public servants are among the measures officials may now consider to reduce future risk.
For citizens, the government framed the crackdown as an essential step to protect public funds and ensure that services reach intended beneficiaries. The CMO’s statement and the Chief Minister’s remarks are likely to be used by the administration to demonstrate political will on anti-corruption.
As the vigilance department commences work on the newly assigned 125 cases, authorities emphasised that investigations will follow established procedures, and any disciplinary or criminal action will be based on evidence developed during inquiries. The state has committed to keeping the process within the legal framework while aiming to deliver timely outcomes.
Officials said further details on investigations and progress in specific cases will be released as enquiries advance, with the government stressing its aim to build a more transparent and accountable administration in Odisha.
