Edward Nathan Varghese, a 21-year-old final-year computer science student at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, has accepted an annual salary offer of ₹2.5 crore from Dutch trading technology firm Optiver. The offer follows a successful internship at the company and marks the highest placement package in IIT Hyderabad’s history.

IIT Hyderabad student job Netherlands secures ₹2.5 crore offer

Varghese, who joined IIT Hyderabad in 2022 after securing the 558th rank in the national JEE examination, chose computer science because of a strong interest in software development. During his internship with Optiver, he received hands-on training in cloud architecture and automation, areas that are central to the firm’s trading infrastructure.

Company assessors noted his capacity to perform under pressure and make sound decisions in demanding situations. Those attributes, combined with technical skill, led Optiver to extend a full-time offer at the reported salary level. The firm, headquartered in the Netherlands, operates in high-frequency trading and relies on advanced software and infrastructure to execute trades worldwide.

The placement is significant for multiple reasons. For IIT Hyderabad it sets a new benchmark in placement figures and demonstrates the global marketability of its graduates. For the student it provides a fast track into a high-visibility role in financial technology, where expertise in cloud systems and automation is in high demand.

Varghese’s path is typical of rising tech talent who convert internships into permanent roles. He had been selected for an internship with Optiver several months earlier, where he completed a structured training programme and contributed to team projects. His experience underlines the importance of practical exposure and industry-aligned skills in securing competitive roles abroad.

Placement officers at IIT Hyderabad highlighted that this offer surpasses the institute’s previous highest package of ₹1.10 crore. They said the achievement reflects both the institute’s rigorous academic environment and the ability of students to adapt to specialised corporate demands.

Industry observers say offers of this nature indicate robust demand for Indian technology graduates in global markets, particularly in specialised segments such as algorithmic trading and cloud infrastructure. Such appointments also reinforce the role of internships and international firms in providing career pathways that link engineering education to global finance and technology sectors.

While the salary figure has attracted attention, faculty members emphasised that long-term career success depends on continuous learning and the ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams. Varghese’s example may motivate other students to pursue internships that align with market needs and to develop technical competencies in cloud systems and automation.

Optiver declined to comment on individual recruitment details beyond confirming its commitment to hiring talented engineers. Varghese is due to complete his final year and will join Optiver after graduation. His appointment adds to a growing number of Indian engineers taking roles with international technology and finance firms, reinforcing India’s reputation as a source of highly skilled technical talent.

Key Takeaways:

  • Edward Nathan Varghese, a final-year IIT Hyderabad computer science student, received a ₹2.5 crore annual offer from Dutch trading firm Optiver.
  • The offer followed an internship where he trained in cloud architecture and automation and demonstrated strong performance under pressure.
  • Varghese entered IIT Hyderabad in 2022 after ranking 558 in the JEE and is the highest-paid placement in the institute’s history.
  • The appointment highlights international demand for Indian tech talent and career pathways through internships.
