On 3 January, visitors to Phu Ruea in Phu Ruea National Park, Loei province, woke to a chilly morning as temperatures dropped to approximately 10°C. The cold spell produced extensive rolling mist that flowed along the mountain ridge and through the forest, creating striking early morning scenes. Travellers gathered at the summit viewpoints to watch the first light of day break over the horizon and to capture photographs of the golden sun illuminating the mist-clad peaks.

Phu Ruea morning mist draws crowds

Photographers and sightseers from several provinces arrived before dawn to secure vantage points, with the busiest period recorded between 05:30 and 07:00. The combination of low temperatures and calm atmospheric conditions produced dense fog that heightened visibility contrasts and made the sunrise particularly photogenic. Visitors described the atmosphere as lively and refreshing, noting how the sunlight gradually painted the sky in warm hues while mist rolled through the valleys.

Ms Netnapa Ngamnet, head of Phu Ruea National Park, said that January marks the start of a distinctly colder season in the area, which has prompted an increase in visitor numbers. She advised travellers to prepare appropriate cold-weather clothing and gear, as night-time and early-morning temperatures generally remain between 10°C and 12°C. Park staff have been reminding visitors about safety on steep and potentially slippery viewing paths and encouraging respect for the natural environment.

The early-morning phenomenon is formed when cooler air settles in low-lying areas and valleys, causing moisture to condense and flow along the contours of the terrain. When combined with clear skies at dawn, these conditions can produce highly photogenic scenes as sunlight passes through the mist. At Phu Ruea, the effect was particularly pronounced this morning because of the prolonged period of low temperatures.

Local businesses and tourism operators reported a modest increase in demand for accommodation and related services as visitors sought to experience the cold weather and panoramic views. Restaurants and cafes near the park gate extended opening hours to serve early visitors, while some local guesthouses offered additional blankets and hot beverages to make guests more comfortable.

Tourists are reminded that while such weather events are safe for most visitors, preparation is key. Warm layers, waterproof outerwear, sturdy footwear and basic first-aid supplies are recommended. Visitors should also follow park regulations, keep to marked trails and avoid disturbing wildlife.

Phu Ruea National Park remains a popular destination for those seeking cool highland air, scenic vistas and seasonal atmospheric phenomena. Park officials expect visitor numbers to remain high through January as more travellers take advantage of the cooler conditions to view sunrises and the distinctive rolling mist that frequently appears along the mountain ridges.

For visitors planning a trip, the park’s staff suggest arriving early to secure a good viewing location and to check local weather updates. Those who witnessed today’s display said the combination of crisp air, flowing mist and the first light of day produced a memorable experience and reinforced Phu Ruea’s reputation as a must-visit destination for winter scenery in Thailand.

Key Takeaways:

  • Temperatures on Phu Ruea dropped to around 10°C, creating picturesque rolling mist across the ridge.
  • Early morning sunrise combined with fog drew visitors to the national park’s viewpoints between 05:30–07:00 GMT+7.
  • Park officials advise visitors to prepare adequate warm clothing as night and early-morning temperatures remain 10–12°C.
  • The event boosted local tourism as travellers recorded sunrise and mist scenes across the mountains.
