Indian Railways is set to introduce its first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, a move officials say will upgrade overnight connectivity between the north-eastern state of Assam and West Bengal. The Railways Ministry confirmed that trials, testing and certification of the new sleeper variant have been completed and that the Prime Minister will flag off the service in January.

The overnight service will operate between Guwahati and Kolkata, linking Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon districts in Assam with Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Maldah, Murshidabad, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly and Howrah in West Bengal. The 16-coach, fully air-conditioned train will include 11 AC 3-tier coaches, four AC 2-tier coaches and one AC First Class coach, offering seating and sleeping arrangements for approximately 823 passengers.
Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the development at a meeting in Rail Bhawan, New Delhi, while extending New Year greetings. The ministry said the train has cleared all mandated trials and certifications and that the launch will mark a notable enhancement in overnight rail travel for passengers on the route.
Design features aim to improve safety, comfort and accessibility. The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will have CCTV cameras in every coach, automatic doors with vestibules to improve passenger movement and reduce noise, and an emergency talk-back unit to allow direct communication between passengers and the train manager. Special arrangements for passengers with reduced mobility are also included.
Officials believe the service will strengthen economic and social ties between Assam and West Bengal by facilitating smoother travel for students, business travellers and families. Railways sources added that 2026 is expected to be a year of major reforms for Indian Railways, with several passenger-centric initiatives scheduled for rollout.
Railway officials presented the sleeper Vande Bharat as the next step in the platform’s evolution. Earlier this month the Firozpur–Delhi Vande Bharat Express was launched, reducing journey times and improving access between Punjab and the national capital. That day service covers the route in about six hours 40 minutes, with key stops including Firozpur, Faridkot, Bathinda, Dhuri, Patiala, Ambala Cantt, Kurukshetra, Panipat and Delhi.
Transport analysts say the sleeper variant could reshape overnight travel on long-distance corridors by combining high-speed, modern rolling stock with the convenience of air-conditioned sleeping berths. They caution that final timetables, fare structures and commercial schedules will determine the service’s appeal to different passenger segments.
For now, the completion of trials and the Prime Minister’s planned inauguration in January place the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train on a fast track to operation.
