Belarus Braces for Snow and Icy Roads on 3 January

Belhydromet has issued a yellow-level weather warning across Belarus for Saturday 3 January as icy road conditions and intermittent snow are expected to affect the whole country. The alert warns drivers to expect slippery surfaces on some stretches of road and advises caution through the first Saturday of 2026.

Belarus weather warning and forecast

Meteorologists say a weakening cyclone centred over the Baltic Sea will influence conditions across Belarus. Skies will be mostly cloudy with occasional clear spells. Periodic snowfall is expected nationwide, with a weak blizzard possible during the daytime in parts of the western regions.

Temperatures are forecast to remain close to freezing through the 24-hour period, generally ranging between 0°C and -6°C. South-westerly winds will pick up to 4–9 m/s in most areas, with gusts up to 12 m/s in places such as Brest and Grodno.

Authorities emphasise that the primary hazard is black ice on roads. Even where snowfall is light, sudden thaw-and-freeze cycles and compacted snow can create treacherous driving conditions. Road users are urged to reduce speed, maintain greater following distances and fit winter tyres where appropriate.

Regional outlook

Minsk will see temperatures between -1°C and -3°C with south-westerly winds at 4–9 m/s. Cloudy spells will alternate with clearer intervals and there is an 80–90% probability of snow at times.

Brest and Grodno, reporting temperatures around 0°C to -2°C, should prepare for stronger gusts up to 12 m/s and intermittent light snow with a risk of a weak blizzard in daytime hours. Visibility may fall locally during heavier showers.

Vitebsk, Gomel and Mogilev will also experience temperatures near -1°C to -3°C, cloud with clearings, and occasional snow. Forecasters put the probability of precipitation in these regions at around 80–90% during the times of expected snowfall.

Practical advice for residents

Residents should monitor local forecasts and travel advisories. Those who must travel are advised to allow extra time, travel at reduced speeds and avoid sudden braking where roads are slippery. Public services and emergency crews typically increase readiness during yellow-level alerts, but the public should take simple precautions such as keeping mobile phones charged and carrying a basic winter kit in vehicles.

Commuters and outdoor workers should dress for prolonged exposure to near-freezing conditions and limit time in windy, exposed locations. Property owners should check that gutters and external pipes are clear to reduce the risk of ice formation near entrances.

Belhydromet will update its forecasts if the cyclone’s track or intensity changes. For the latest information, follow official meteorological channels and local authorities’ traffic notices.

Key Takeaways:

  • Belhydromet issued a yellow weather warning across Belarus for 3 January due to icy roads and possible blizzards.
  • Temperatures will range from 0 to -6°C with periodic snow and occasional blizzard in western districts.
  • Strongest winds and gusts expected in Brest and Grodno; motorists should take care on icy stretches.
