Belarus marked the start of 2026 with 76 newborns delivered in the first hours of the year, the Ministry of Health said in a press release. The tally included 39 girls and 37 boys, with births recorded across the capital, regional centres and specialised maternity facilities.
Belarus newborns regional breakdown
The earliest arrivals were concentrated in the opening minutes of the new year. Five babies were born within the first three minutes: three girls at 00:01 in the regional maternity hospital of Vitebsk region, at Vitebsk City Clinical Maternity Hospital and at the Lida Central Regional Hospital; a boy at 00:02 in the Grodno Regional Clinical Perinatal Centre; and another girl at 00:03 at Mogilev Clinical Hospital of Emergency Medical Care.
Across regions the distribution was as follows. Brest region reported 11 births — seven girls and four boys — with the first baby of the region born at 01:50 in the Brest Regional Maternity Hospital. Vitebsk region welcomed 10 infants, five boys and five girls. One of the girls born at the regional maternity hospital became the sixth child in her family in the town of Senno.
Gomel region recorded four births, evenly split between boys and girls, while Grodno region reported eight births — three boys and five girls — including a baby born at 00:01 in Lida Central Regional Hospital and a boy at 00:02 in the Grodno perinatal centre. Minsk region registered 13 newborns — five boys and eight girls — with the first baby in the region delivered in Molodechno at 05:07. Mogilev region reported 10 deliveries, six boys and four girls.
The capital registered the largest single concentration of births. Minsk hospitals recorded 16 newborns, 10 boys and six girls. The first baby in the city arrived at 04:00 in City Clinical Hospital No.1; she is the first child in a young family whose mother is a citizen of Turkmenistan. Another early birth in the capital took place at 07:39 in City Clinical Hospital No.6.
Specialised centres also contributed to the national total. The Republican Scientific and Practical Centre “Mother and Child” reported four births: two boys and two girls.
Health authorities noted the work of maternity wards and emergency services that ensured care through the night. The Ministry of Health’s press office highlighted several instances where newborns were welcomed into larger families, including multi-child households in Vitebsk and Gomel regions.
While the Ministry’s statement focused on the raw numbers and the locations of the births, the early-year figures offer a snapshot of delivery services operating across Belarus at the turn of the calendar. Regional maternity hospitals and perinatal centres handled a steady flow of deliveries, from the opening moments of 2026 through to the morning hours.
The Ministry did not provide comparative data with previous years in its initial release. Further updates or more detailed statistics on neonatal health and maternity service performance may follow as hospitals compile their full reports for the first day of the year.
