Mumbai Customs officers intercepted a series of high‑value consignments at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport between 30 and 31 December 2025, recovering diamonds, multiple gold consignments and hydroponic cannabis worth crores of rupees. Officials said the operation, driven by profiling and targeted intelligence, led to several arrests and exposed an organised attempt to move contraband through international transit channels.

Mumbai customs seizure: items intercepted

In one of the most striking recoveries, customs officers found 849.6 carats of diamonds hidden inside a passenger’s body cavity. The stones were valued at approximately Rs 2.52 crore. In separate checks, officers recovered about 89 grams of 24‑carat gold concealed as rhodium‑plated buttons, valued at Rs 11.35 lakh.

More substantial gold consignments were also uncovered. Customs personnel recovered 1.47 kg of 24‑carat gold dust in wax form, valued at around Rs 1.87 crore, in an operation that involved Bangladeshi transit passengers handing over the gold to an airport staff member. In another case, two passengers were found carrying 160 grams of 24‑carat gold, assessed at Rs 20.41 lakh, following specific intelligence inputs.

Authorities said the variety of concealment methods and the involvement of airport personnel pointed to evolving smuggling techniques and an organised supply chain exploiting transit operations.

Hydroponic weed seizures and arrests

Customs officers also intercepted suspected hydroponic cannabis in two separate cases involving passengers arriving from Bangkok. In the first, 8.008 kg of the substance was recovered; officials estimated its illicit market value at about Rs 8.008 crore. The traveller was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. In a second case, customs seized 1.946 kg, valued at roughly Rs 1.946 crore, and the passenger was similarly arrested under the NDPS Act.

Mumbai Customs emphasised that the narcotics recoveries were significant both for their weight and for the method of concealment, signalling the need for persistent vigilance against international drug trafficking routes.

How the operation worked

Officials said the operation combined spot checks, Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) profiling and specific intelligence inputs to identify high‑risk passengers and consignments. The airport commissionerate of Mumbai Customs Zone‑III coordinated the activity, focusing on transit hubs where organised networks often attempt to move contraband with the help of complicit intermediaries.

The seizures demonstrate an emphasis on intelligence‑led enforcement and targeted screening. Customs sources noted that routine checks, when allied with technological profiling and actionable tips, can disrupt sophisticated smuggling attempts before contraband leaves the airport precincts.

All seized items were taken into custody and investigations are ongoing. The arrested individuals face legal proceedings under applicable customs and narcotics laws. Mumbai Customs said the cases will feed into broader inquiries to identify and dismantle wider networks involved in cross‑border smuggling.

Authorities reiterated a call for sustained intelligence sharing between agencies and continued vigilance by airport operators, noting that cooperation between transit passengers, airport staff and external handlers remains a key vulnerability that law enforcement will continue to target.

Key Takeaways:

  • Focus on Mumbai customs seizure of high‑value contraband — diamonds, multiple gold consignments and hydroponic weed — intercepted between 30–31 December 2025.
  • Diamonds concealed inside a passenger recovered (849.6 carats, ~Rs 2.52 crore); multiple gold seizures involved rhodium‑plated buttons, gold dust and collusion with airport staff.
  • Hydroponic weed totalling over 9.9 kg seized from Bangkok arrivals; suspects arrested under the NDPS Act.
  • Operations used APIS profiling, spot checks and specific intelligence, highlighting strengthened border controls and anti‑smuggling measures.
