Zee Studios has confirmed that Gandhi Talks will open in theatres on 30 January 2026. The film is an ambitious return to silent storytelling in contemporary Indian cinema, relying on visual performance and music rather than spoken dialogue. The project reunites a high-calibre ensemble with composer A.R. Rahman to create an experience that rests on expression, atmosphere and musical narration.

Gandhi Talks embraces silence as storytelling

Gandhi Talks places performance at the centre of its narrative. Leading actors Vijay Sethupathi and Arvind Swamy headline the cast, joined by Aditi Rao Hydari and Siddharth Jadhav. Each performer has reportedly embraced a demanding approach, conveying character and emotion through gesture, facial nuance and physical rhythm. Director Kishore Belekar has described the film as an exercise in trust, where silence invites the audience to read subtext and respond to mood rather than to literal speech.

A.R. Rahman’s score plays a critical role. Without dialogue, the music functions as the film’s principal voice, guiding pacing and mood and filling the spaces where words would normally sit. Early notes from the production team suggest Rahman’s compositions are designed to be immersive, helping the film speak across language barriers and making Gandhi Talks a natural candidate for international festivals.

Producers at Zee Studios and supporting partners, including Meera Chopra, have backed the project as part of a broader commitment to films that prioritise craft and artistic risk. In recent years, Indian studios have balanced commercial releases with smaller, prestigious pictures aimed at critics and festival programmers. Gandhi Talks is positioned to join that latter category, offering an experience that may appeal to both domestic arthouse audiences and overseas selectors.

The choice of a silent form is both a creative and strategic one. Creatively, it asks actors and technicians to refine the fundamentals of cinema: composition, timing, movement and sound design. Strategically, it broadens the film’s potential audience. A silence-centred film reduces the need for subtitling and can travel easily across linguistic markets, strengthening India’s cultural export profile.

Industry observers note that the film’s release date, 30 January 2026, places it early in the year, a timing that may favour festival submissions and international attention ahead of the spring circuit. Zee Studios’ involvement provides a distribution platform likely to secure a wide release in India and targeted screenings abroad.

While Gandhi Talks will be judged on its artistic merits, the project already signals a willingness within mainstream Indian production to invest in unconventional formats. For audiences and critics alike, the film will be an opportunity to assess how traditional performance techniques and contemporary filmcraft combine when dialogue is deliberately absent. If the film fulfils its promise, it could become a notable entry in recent Indian cinema that champions craft-driven storytelling and cross-border appeal.

Gandhi Talks will open in theatres across India on 30 January 2026. Further details on screenings and festival plans are expected as the release approaches.

Key Takeaways:

  • Gandhi Talks is a rare modern Indian silent film headlined by Vijay Sethupathi, Arvind Swamy, Aditi Rao Hydari and Siddharth Jadhav.
  • A.R. Rahman provides the film’s score, serving as the principal emotional narrator in place of dialogue.
  • Director Kishore Belekar and Zee Studios back the project as a craft-driven, festival-ready piece of cinema.
  • The film’s 30 January 2026 release underlines India’s cultural reach and potential for international festival interest.
