Reload Bilhete Único by Jan 5 as São Paulo Raises Fares in Brazil

Passengers who use São Paulo’s public transport have until 23:59 on 5 January to recharge their Bilhete Único at the current fare before new rates come into force. The municipal government confirmed that bus fares will rise from R$5 to R$5.30 from 6 January, an increase of 6 per cent that exceeds the accumulated inflation of 3.9 per cent recorded by the IBGE’s IPCA.

São Paulo transport fare increase: key dates and rules

SPTrans has said that any credits purchased up to the end of 5 January at the existing R$5 rate will remain valid for 180 days. During that period the system will continue to deduct the old value. Once the 180 days expire, or for any recharges made after 5 January, the new tariff will be charged automatically.

The deadline and extended validity apply to multiple ticketing products across the municipal system, including the Bilhete Único, Cartão TOP, Cartão BOM and Vale-Transporte. Users should check card balance, expiry and usage guidance via the official card apps and channels to avoid unexpected charges.

How much can you load and how to save

Passengers can load up to 100 fares on the Bilhete Único Comum and up to 200 fares on Vale-Transporte cards, following municipal system rules. By recharging before the deadline, commuters can lock in the current fare and effectively spread the benefit over the next six months, which may ease household budgets in the short term.

SPTrans recommends using official applications and authorised points of sale to verify balances and validity periods. Recharging in advance also protects users from immediate effects of the tariff rise, although new journeys after the expiry of pre-purchased credit will be charged at the higher rate.

Metro and commuter trains also affected

On 29 December the state administration led by Tarcísio de Freitas announced a rise for metro and commuter rail fares from R$5.20 to R$5.40. The combined fare for journeys that integrate metro/CPTM and buses has not yet been published. Metro and train users likewise have until 5 January to load credits at the current rate; tickets bought before that deadline will be debited at the previous value until the 180-day validity ends.

This is the third increase under the current state administration, which previously raised fares from R$4.40 to R$5 in December 2023. With the latest adjustment, the state public transport tariff has risen by 22.7 per cent since the end of 2023.

What commuters should do now

Commuters should check their card type and balance, note the loading limits, and consider recharging before 23:59 on 5 January if they wish to preserve credits at the current fare. Keep records of recharges and use official channels for balance and validity checks. While preloading offers short-term savings, households should also factor in the broader context of repeated fare rises when planning transport expenses for 2025.

Authorities have not yet released details on updated integrated fares for combined bus and metro/CPTM journeys. Users should monitor announcements from SPTrans and the state transport secretariat for further information.

Key Takeaways:

  • São Paulo transport fare increase requires users to top up Bilhete Único by 23:59 on 5 January to lock current rates.
  • Credits purchased by 5 January remain valid for 180 days; new tariffs apply only to later recharges.
  • Municipal buses rise from R$5 to R$5.30; metro and trains rise from R$5.20 to R$5.40.
  • Limits: Bilhete Único Comum up to 100 fares, Vale-Transporte up to 200 fares; check official apps for balance and validity.
