Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated a large police housing development in Satara on Friday, saying the new residences will bring lasting improvements to the lives of police officers and their families across Maharashtra. The Vrundavan police township, together with the new Shahupuri police station building, was opened in a ceremony attended by senior state ministers, police officials and local representatives.

Maharashtra police housing project delivers modern homes

The Satara township comprises 698 dwelling units designed for police officers and personnel. Facilities include a gymnasium, a library, a multipurpose auditorium and a power house, along with landscaped communal spaces. The Chief Minister praised the work of the Maharashtra Police Housing and Welfare Corporation, which has been tasked with delivering quality homes in each district of the state.

Speaking at the inauguration, Mr Fadnavis said the housing programme will continue without interruption and reiterated a commitment he first announced on assuming office in 2014. “We authorised the Police Housing Corporation, provided funds and began constructing homes across Maharashtra so that police personnel and their families can live in decent accommodation,” he stated. He added that replacing dilapidated old lines with planned housing will create a healthier and more secure environment for serving officers and their families.

The ceremony in Satara brought together ministers including the Minister for Tourism and Guardian Minister Shambhuraj Desai, Public Works Minister Shivendrasinhraje Bhosale and Rural Development Minister Jaykumar Gore. Senior police leadership present included the Director General of Police, officials from the Police Housing and Welfare Corporation and regional police commanders. Local civic leaders and police staff attended as representatives of the beneficiaries.

Officials said the township has been laid out with amenities intended to support the welfare of police families and enhance morale. The inclusion of recreational and community spaces recognises the long hours that personnel spend on duty and aims to provide a restorative home environment when they return. As part of the inauguration, the Chief Minister conducted an inspection of the development and handed over symbolic keys to several police families.

The project follows state policy to prioritise housing for uniformed personnel. Authorities noted that many officers previously lived in ageing lines with inadequate facilities. By investing in planned housing, the state government aims to reduce that burden and improve the retention and wellbeing of its police force. Chief Minister Fadnavis congratulated engineers and officials involved in the project and singled out chief engineer Rajaram Purigosavi and Vilas Birari for their contributions.

Local officials said the development in Satara is part of a wider rollout programme that will see similar townships established in each district. The Police Housing and Welfare Corporation will continue to oversee construction, funding and allocation as the state pursues its objective of providing dignified, functional homes for those who serve the community.

Residents and serving officers at the inauguration expressed relief at the improved living conditions and conveyed appreciation for a scheme they said recognises the sacrifices made by police personnel on duty. The state government characterised the initiative as a long-term investment in public safety and community stability.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Maharashtra police housing project in Satara provides 698 modern units with amenities including a gym, library and multipurpose hall.
  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the Vrundavan police township and new Shahupuri police station, pledging continued construction across all districts.
  • The scheme aims to replace poor old lines, improve welfare for police families and offer stable, dignified accommodation for officers and staff.
  • The project reflects a larger state initiative begun in 2014 to fund police housing through the Police Housing Corporation.
