Indonesia’s Bandung to Repair Lembah Sarimadu Road After Landslide

Bandung city authorities have moved swiftly to protect residents and stabilise infrastructure after a landslide severely damaged the road at Lembah Sarimadu in the Sarijadi area of Sukasari district. Local officials say the collapse of a retaining wall has eroded the roadside, leaving several homes in a precarious state and prompting immediate safety measures.

Local subdistrict chief Suharyanto said the mayor issued direct instructions to treat the site as a priority. “The main directive from the mayor is anticipation. The landslide has undermined the carriageway and affected a number of houses, so the response must be extra careful,” he said on Saturday, 3 January.

Bandung road repair

For safety reasons, city authorities have restricted access to the affected stretch of Jalan Lembah Sarimadu. Heavy vehicles are barred from the route while it remains open only to pedestrians and two-wheeled vehicles. The measure aims to limit vibrations and further soil movement while temporary assessments and emergency actions continue.

Officials confirmed that the collapse involved the kirmir or the concrete retaining turap that supported the road edge, which in turn led to progressive erosion of the embankment. The damage is substantial: at least three nearby houses are now classed as vulnerable and require additional monitoring and precautionary support to prevent greater loss should subsequent slips occur.

Coordination with technical departments is already under way. The city has held discussions with the Water Resources and Highways Agency (Dinas Sumber Daya Air dan Bina Marga, DSDABM) and officials say funding has been allocated for a permanent repair scheme.

“We have coordinated with DSDABM and the work will be followed up in 2026 as the budget is available,” Suharyanto said. He asked residents to be patient, explaining that because the projected cost is significant the project must proceed through a competitive tender in line with procurement regulations to ensure safety and quality.

In the meantime, local teams will carry out periodic inspections and maintain communication with affected households. Mayor Muhammad Farhan instructed subdistrict and village officials to keep monitoring the site and to maintain regular contact with residents while temporary measures are in place.

“I expect the lurah and camat to continue monitoring this area and to keep advising the community,” the mayor said, stressing the importance of vigilance in zones prone to extreme weather.

This response forms part of Bandung’s broader Siskamling Siaga Bencana disaster preparedness programme, which aims to mitigate the impact of extreme weather and landslides in vulnerable neighbourhoods through early warning, community engagement and infrastructure reinforcement.

Authorities have not yet set a precise start date for on-site construction beyond the 2026 timetable, but emergency teams remain stationed to assess ground stability and to coordinate temporary protections. Residents affected by the incident are being urged to report any signs of further ground movement and to follow guidance from local officials until permanent repairs are completed.

Key Takeaways:

  • Bandung city restricts vehicle access and prioritises safety after a landslide damaged the Lembah Sarimadu road.
  • At least three houses are now considered at risk and emergency measures have been put in place.
  • Bandung road repair funding has been allocated and permanent works will proceed in 2026 through a formal tender process.
  • Local authorities will continue regular monitoring and community outreach under the city’s disaster preparedness programme.
