A monumental shivling, reported to be the world’s largest, has reached Gopalganj in Bihar after a cross‑country journey from Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu. The black granite monolith measures 33 feet in length and weighs approximately 210 metric tonnes. Temple authorities say the installation will take place on 17 January at the Virat Ramayan Temple in Kesaria, East Champaran, following traditional rites.
World’s largest shivling in Bihar to be installed on 17 January
The shivling departed Pattikadu village near Mahabalipuram on 21 November and completed a roughly 45‑day road voyage that covered Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh before reaching Bihar. Wherever the convoy paused, local devotees gathered to offer prayers, perform aarti and welcome the sacred object.
Carved from a single black granite monolith, the structure took nearly a decade of work by artisans to complete. The surface carries 1008 sahasralingam engravings. Transported on a specially designed 96‑wheeled vehicle, the shivling drew large crowds along its route and required coordination with multiple state authorities for safe movement.
Temple officials said that after a one‑day halt, the shivling will depart for Balathri on 5 January, where a grand welcome ceremony is planned at 11:00. A special entrance gate has been prepared for the reception, which will include puja, aarti and musical accompaniment. From Balathri, the procession will continue to Chainpatti in Gopalganj and then proceed through Khajuria and Husaini to Kesaria.
On 17 January, the shivling will be installed in the Virat Ramayan Temple complex. The ceremony will include peeth puja, hawan and other prescribed rituals, after which the pran pratistha will be performed. Temple CEO B.K. Mishra and superintendent Sudhakaran have overseen the logistics and said all preparations are underway to receive the monolith and complete its consecration.
The Virat Ramayan Temple is being constructed by the Mahaveer Mandir Nyas committee and is described by its planners as an ambitious project. Once finished, the complex will measure 1080 feet in length and 540 feet in width, and will include 18 shikhars and 22 sub‑temples. The main shikhar is planned to rise 270 feet. Construction work began after a foundation ceremony on 20 June 2023. The site at Janakinagar, between Kesaria and Chakia, is about 120 kilometres from Patna and will also host four ashrams within the temple precincts.
The project is identified as the dream initiative of Padma Shri recipient Acharya Kishor Kunal. Officials expect the completed complex to attract significant numbers of pilgrims and tourists, boosting local economic activity and enhancing Bihar’s profile as a destination for religious tourism.
Local officials and temple managers have been coordinating traffic management, security and crowd control measures in anticipation of the installation event. Organisers emphasise adherence to prescribed rituals and safety protocols during the final stages of the shivling’s transit and during the consecration ceremony.
The arrival of the shivling has generated widespread interest across states visited by the convoy. For many devotees it has been a rare opportunity to witness a large‑scale religious artefact on the move, and for the region it signals the nearing completion of a major temple complex that planners say will be of national significance.
