New Delhi — Former NASA astronaut Sunita Williams will appear at the ninth Kerala Literature Festival (KLF), organisers confirmed on Tuesday, joining a global line-up when the event opens on 22 January 2026. Williams, 60, who has spent in excess of 300 days in orbit, is expected to speak on science, exploration, leadership and resilience.

Sunita Williams Kerala Literature Festival appearance will blend science with public conversation

Williams’s participation marks a continuing effort by KLF to widen its remit beyond literature to include science and discovery. Ravi DeeCee, Managing Director of DC Books and chief facilitator at KLF, said Williams’s presence was particularly meaningful because of her longstanding support for DC Books and the festival.

“The Kerala Literature Festival has always believed in expanding the idea of the fest to include science, discovery, leadership and the human spirit,” Mr DeeCee said. “Sunita Williams represents the courage to explore the unknown and the discipline required to stretch human boundaries.”

Williams, a former US Navy captain, cemented her reputation during a third mission to the International Space Station in June last year. The mission lasted 286 days and saw her set the record for the most spacewalking time by a woman. That achievement, together with more than 300 days in space over her career, will form the basis of the talks she intends to deliver to audiences across generations.

Born on 19 September 1965 in Euclid, Ohio, Williams is the daughter of Deepak Pandya, originally from Jhulasan in Gujarat’s Mehsana district, and Ursuline Bonnie Pandya of Slovenian origin. Selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1998, she trained at the Johnson Space Centre and also worked with the Russian space agency on the Russian contribution to the International Space Station.

KLF 2026 will host more than 500 speakers from around the world and has named Germany as the guest nation for this edition. The festival’s diverse roster includes Nobel laureates Abdulrazak Gurnah, Olga Tokarczuk and Abhijit Banerjee, Booker Prize-winning writer-activist Banu Mushtaq, former PepsiCo chief Indra Nooyi and author Amish Tripathi among others.

The inclusion of a leading figure from the space community underlines a shift in how literary festivals in the region approach public programming. By inviting scientists and explorers alongside novelists, economists and artists, KLF aims to stimulate cross-disciplinary conversation and reach audiences with varied interests.

Organisers say Williams’s sessions will emphasise leadership and resilience, drawing lessons from long-duration missions and international collaboration in space. Attendees can expect first-hand accounts of life on the International Space Station and reflections on teamwork, risk management and the drive to pursue knowledge beyond established borders.

Williams’s visit is likely to attract attention from students, educators and science enthusiasts across India and beyond, offering a rare chance to hear from one of the most experienced space travellers of recent decades. The festival will run a full programme of panels, lectures and cultural events, providing multiple forums for engagement during the January run.

Further details about Williams’s sessions and the full schedule will be released by KLF organisers in the coming weeks.
