Amit Shah Andaman visit set for January 2 ahead of parliamentary meeting

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to arrive in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on 2 January to chair a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Home Affairs, an official said on Tuesday. The visit, which runs through 4 January, will include committee deliberations, a public event on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and engagements with local and defence officials.

Amit Shah Andaman visit and planned engagements

According to the official, Shah will be received at the airport by the Lieutenant Governor, Admiral D K Joshi (Retd). The Parliamentary Consultative Committee meeting is scheduled for 3 January in Wandoor, where lawmakers will discuss ministry business and related policy matters. Later that day the Home Minister will attend an event on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Dr B R Ambedkar Institute of Technology auditorium in Dollygunj.

Shah is expected to depart the archipelago on 4 January. The official said the schedule follows an earlier visit by the Home Minister on 12 December, when he attended commemorations marking the 116th anniversary of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s poem ‘Sagara Pran Talamala’.

Defence presence and regional oversight

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan, will also arrive in the islands on 2 January. On 3 January he will visit Car Nicobar and the Andaman and Nicobar Command at Sri Vijaya Puram to meet senior command officers and review operational matters. The simultaneous visits by the Home Minister and the CDS underscore an integrated approach to governance and security in the strategically important archipelago.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands hold a critical position in India’s maritime geography, overseeing sea lines of communication in the eastern Indian Ocean. Visits by central government and military leadership typically centre on infrastructure, disaster preparedness, and coordination between civilian authorities and armed forces. Officials said the upcoming meetings will provide MPs and senior officials an opportunity to review policy priorities and on-ground requirements.

What to expect from the committee meeting

Parliamentary Consultative Committee meetings are forums where members of Parliament engage with ministries to discuss policies, planned projects and emerging challenges. The Home Affairs committee will likely cover internal security matters pertinent to island administration, law and order, and implementation of statutory reforms under the ministry’s remit. The event on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at DBRAIT is expected to explain provisions of the new legal framework to local stakeholders.

Local administrators and security officials will be looking to use the visit to highlight infrastructure needs, connectivity issues, and measures to bolster resilience against natural disasters and external threats. The presence of senior defence leadership at the same time may facilitate clearer coordination on both civilian and military initiatives across the islands.

Officials have not released detailed statements on any bilateral or external diplomatic activity linked to the visits. Observers note that high‑level visits to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands attract attention because of the territory’s strategic location and its role in India’s regional maritime posture.

The Home Ministry and the office of the Chief of Defence Staff are expected to issue further details closer to the date, including the precise timetable and any public interactions planned with local representatives and residents.
