Campos traffic operation improves summer safety for tourists

Local authorities in Campos dos Goytacazes, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, have launched a coordinated traffic enforcement operation ahead of the summer season to improve road flow and bolster safety for visitors. The joint initiative, carried out by the Civil Guard and the Military Police, concentrated on known traffic bottlenecks and popular tourist routes, including Lagoa de Cima and the beaches of Farol and Xexé.

Campos traffic operation targets tourist routes

The first phase of the operation resulted in the inspection of 223 vehicles. Officers removed 10 vehicles from circulation and issued 19 notifications for various infractions. Authorities said the measures were designed to tackle obstructive parking, unsafe driving and other behaviours that tend to worsen congestion and increase risk for pedestrians and other road users during peak season.

Police and municipal guards established checkpoints at strategic points and carried out vehicle checks and document inspections. The visible presence of uniformed officers also aimed to deter risky behaviour and provide reassurance to residents and visitors using the area’s main thoroughfares.

Campos dos Goytacazes attracts significant visitor numbers during the summer months, placing additional pressure on local roads and parking facilities. By focusing resources on high-traffic corridors and access points to beaches and lakes, authorities hope to maintain steady traffic flow and reduce incidents that could interrupt the tourist experience.

Local officials framed the operation as preventive and administrative rather than punitive. The removals and notifications were presented as necessary actions to restore order and ensure compliance with traffic regulations. The presence of enforcement teams also created opportunities to inform motorists about parking rules and safe driving practices.

Transport planners say targeted operations can be effective when combined with clear signage and temporary traffic management measures. In the weeks ahead, municipal teams will monitor the operation’s impact on congestion levels and safety indicators, and adjust deployment patterns according to observed demand and risk.

Residents welcomed the early action, noting that many of the town’s access roads become congested during holiday weekends. Business owners in beachside areas expressed support for measures that promise more predictable access for customers and delivery vehicles, particularly in the peak trading period.

Authorities also emphasised coordination with local tourism services and municipal departments to ensure the operation complements broader visitor management plans. This includes giving priority to emergency access routes and ensuring disabled parking spaces remain available and unobstructed.

While the initial results provide a snapshot of enforcement activity, officials said the operation will continue and may be intensified during known peak dates. The ongoing effort aims to protect both residents and holidaymakers, reduce avoidable incidents and support a smoother, safer summer on Campos dos Goytacazes’s roads.

For motorists, authorities recommended carrying necessary documents, respecting parking signage and avoiding obstructive parking near beach access points. The Civil Guard and Military Police urged cooperation from drivers and residents to preserve mobility and safety throughout the season.
