School holidays 2026 India – Term, Festival and Summer Breaks

As the new year begins, schools across India are publishing holiday calendars for the 2026-27 academic year. While private institutions may set their own schedules, several dates are commonly fixed across central and state boards, making planning easier for parents and students.

School holidays 2026 India: what to expect

Many schools will remain closed for winter and New Year breaks during the first weeks of January 2026. Delhi schools, for example, have scheduled a winter break from 1 January to 15 January 2026, which coincides with the end of the academic session for some classes. In Jammu and Kashmir, winter vacations often extend into February, with the length of the break varying by class and local conditions. Some institutions began their holidays at the end of December 2025.

Where weather disrupts travel or attendance, a number of schools may opt for online lessons until conditions improve. Thick fog in northern regions has already prompted contingency planning from several education authorities.

Fixed national and cultural holidays

Across central boards such as CBSE and ICSE and many state boards, schools typically observe a set of national and cultural holidays. While observance can vary by state and local authority, the most commonly noted dates for 2026 include:

  • 1 January – New Year’s Day (holiday in some regions)
  • 26 January – Republic Day
  • 4–5 March – Holi / Holika Dahan (regional variation)
  • 31 March – Mahavir Jayanti
  • 3 April – Good Friday
  • 1 May – Labour / May Day
  • 15 August – Independence Day
  • 2 October – Gandhi Jayanti
  • 20 October – Dussehra
  • 8 November – Diwali (may be observed)
  • 24 November – Guru Nanak Jayanti
  • 25 December – Christmas Day

Boards and state education departments will publish official lists; parents should consult their child’s school for the definitive calendar. Private schools often follow their own timetables, which can differ from government orders and board notifications.

Summer break and weather considerations

Most Indian schools schedule the summer break during May and June to avoid the peak heat. Exact dates depend on the state, board and local climate. Some states begin summer holidays in early May and resume classes in June or early July, while hotter regions may extend breaks further. Heatwaves and other extreme weather events can lead to adjustments during the term.

Parents and guardians should note that several holidays are set according to the lunar calendar and may shift year to year. Additionally, state government orders and changing weather conditions can alter published schedules. This makes it important to check monthly updates from schools, particularly for privately run institutions that retain flexibility in setting term dates.

To avoid last-minute disruption, families are advised to confirm travel plans and childcare arrangements once their school issues an official calendar. Schools will usually communicate any emergency changes, including switches to remote learning, through their official channels.

For the latest official notifications, consult your child’s school or the relevant education board. This article provides a general guide to expected School holidays 2026 India but is not a substitute for school-specific schedules.

Key Takeaways:

  • Key dates for School holidays 2026 India include winter, festival and summer breaks across boards and states.
  • Winter vacations start in January for many regions, with some areas extending into February.
  • Major national and cultural holidays such as Republic Day, Holi, Diwali and Christmas are widely observed.
  • Summer breaks typically fall in May and June, but specific dates vary by state, board and weather conditions.
