Police in Kebbi State have ruled out a bomb or aerial activity in the explosions heard at the General Hospital in Bagudo. Investigators say the blasts resulted from gas cylinders overheating during a fire at the facility.
Investigation finds Kebbi hospital explosion caused by gas cylinders
The Police Public Relations Officer in Kebbi State, SP Bashir Usman, said Explosive Ordnance Disposal–Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear experts (EOD-CBRN), working with the Commissioner of Police Tactical Team, completed an on-site assessment and found no evidence of explosives.
“Findings by our experts confirmed that the loud explosions were linked to an inferno that caused gas cylinders connected to air-conditioning units and refrigeration equipment to overheat,” SP Usman said in a statement. He added that there was no helicopter or any aerial activity associated with the incident.
Authorities reported that the incident produced no fatalities and no injuries, as verified by the expert teams on site. Emergency responders moved swiftly to contain the fire and secure the premises while investigators carried out their examination.
Local residents and social media users had speculated about a possible bomb blast after hearing the loud noises. The police statement urged the public and media outlets to disregard unverified reports and to rely on official updates from the command.
Hospital and state officials continue to monitor the situation. The command said it had full control of the scene and pledged transparent communication with residents to prevent misinformation and undue alarm.
Healthcare safety experts say hospitals that use gas-powered equipment should review storage and installation practices to reduce the risk of similar incidents. Proper maintenance of air-conditioning systems and refrigeration units, secure ventilation, and routine inspection of gas cylinder integrity are among standard measures recommended to mitigate hazards.
In Bagudo and across Kebbi State, authorities and health managers are expected to undertake checks to ensure medical facilities meet fire and safety regulations. The police urged facility managers to cooperate with investigators and to report any hazards promptly.
The swift confirmation by EOD-CBRN teams and the absence of casualties will be welcome reassurance to local communities. Still, the episode highlights the importance of safety protocols in health facilities and the need for clear communication during emergencies.
Residents were reminded that official information about the incident would be released through the Kebbi State Police Command and relevant health authorities. The police reaffirmed their commitment to public safety and transparent updates as any further findings emerge.
