India Readies Jewar Airport for January Opening

The Noida International Airport at Jewar is on track to open in January after state officials said construction is complete and the aerodrome licence is being processed. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath told the state Assembly on 25 December that the long‑awaited facility will become the state’s fifth international airport and is expected to be the largest in India.

Jewar Airport opening plans and timeline

The airport’s first phase had been scheduled to begin operations in September 2024 but missed that target. According to reports, developers have finished building the facilities and are awaiting final regulatory sign‑offs. The project is being developed as a greenfield airport in the Jewar area of Gautam Buddh Nagar under a public–private partnership led by Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd and Noida International Airport, with major construction and services provided by firms including Tata Projects.

In its initial phase the airport will operate one runway and is projected to handle around 1.2 crore passengers annually. Long‑term plans reported by the Indian Express envisage an expansion to multiple runways and a far larger footprint, with eventual capacity targets quoted at up to 30 crore passengers a year. Officials say the facility will span roughly 13,000 hectares in the first phase and may expand further over time.

Economic boost and jobs

State authorities view the project as a catalyst for growth across Western Uttar Pradesh. The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority is preparing the surrounding area as a manufacturing hub, attracting sectors such as electronics, electric vehicles, solar, automotive and consumer goods. The airport is expected to improve global connectivity for the Delhi‑NCR region and to draw both domestic and international investment.

Construction and ancillary activities have already generated employment opportunities. Officials report that more than 5,000 jobs linked to the project will offer benefits such as minimum wages, provident fund, gratuity and employee state insurance. Special schemes for Project Affected Families include an online careers portal, training in English and airport operations, soft skills courses and recruitment drives. Local technical institutes, including ITI Jewar, have been upgraded and trainees have begun securing placements.

Transport links and regional development

Even before commercial flights begin, the airport is reshaping the Yamuna Expressway corridor. Real‑estate activity has accelerated on the approaches from Noida and Greater Noida. Authorities plan to extend Regional Rapid Transit System rail links and Metro routes to serve the airport in the coming years, improving access for passengers and workers across the region.

Officials describe the terminal as a state‑of‑the‑art, net‑zero facility, combining efficiency with hospitality. If the aerodrome licence is granted as expected and the opening proceeds in January, Jewar will provide a significant new gateway for air travel in northern India and is likely to become a major economic hub for the region.

Key Takeaways:

  • Jewar Airport opening expected in January after completion of construction and aerodrome licence process.
  • First phase will operate one runway and handle about 1.2 crore passengers annually, with long-term plans for five runways and up to 30 crore passengers.
  • Project is set to boost Western Uttar Pradesh’s economy, spur real estate and manufacturing, and create over 5,000 jobs.
  • Transport links including RRTS and Metro extensions are planned to connect the airport to Delhi‑NCR.
