India’s South Indian film industry enters January 2026 with a packed release calendar, led by star-driven projects that span horror-comedy, family comedy and emotional romance. The slate will test festive box-office appetites during Sankranti and the surrounding weeks, with several high-profile titles aiming for wide theatrical openings.

South Indian films January 2026

The most anticipated release is The Raja Saab, headlined by Prabhas alongside Malavika Mohanan, Sanjay Dutt, Boman Irani and Nidhhi Agerwal. Directed by Maruthi, the big-budget production — reportedly close to Rs 400 crore — marks Prabhas’s first foray into the horror-comedy genre. After multiple delays, the film is scheduled for a grand release on 9 January 2026, and its scale and star power position it as a major box-office contender.

Also eyeing a 9 January release is Jana Nayakudu, billed as Vijay’s final big-screen appearance. Reports indicate some resistance from Telugu producers over a potential clash with The Raja Saab, underscoring how release-date congestion during festival season can prompt trade friction. While one report listed a 2025 date, multiple industry notices point to a January 2026 release during the same peak window.

Chiranjeevi will return to screens in Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu, co-starring Nayanthara. The film, directed by Anil Ravipudi, is set for release on 12 January 2026. It represents the first collaboration between the megastar and Ravipudi, a pairing that has generated strong expectations among fans and industry observers expecting a commercially minded entertainer tailored to the Sankranti crowd.

Ravi Teja’s Bhartha Mahasayulaku Vignyapthi — directed by Kishore Tirumala — takes a different tack. Scheduled for 13 January 2026, the romantic drama has been produced on a modest budget and emphasises character-driven, emotionally charged storytelling rather than spectacle. Such films often rely on word-of-mouth and festival momentum to find their audience.

Naveen Polishetty’s Anaganaga Oka Raju is planned for release during Sankranti 2026, with Meenakshi Chaudhary as the female lead. Polishetty’s blend of comic timing and relatable characters has proven effective with family audiences, and this title looks positioned to capitalise on that appeal during the holiday period.

Rounding out the list is Nari Nari Naduma Murari, directed by Ram Abbaraju. Promoted as a light-hearted, family-friendly comedy with festive spirit, it is slated for release on 14 January 2026. The film’s tone and timing suggest it aims to be a reliable draw for households seeking celebratory entertainment.

Collectively, these six releases illustrate the diversity of contemporary South Indian cinema: from lavish, high-budget ventures to intimate dramas and broad comedies. The concentration of releases around Sankranti is typical of regional trade strategy, but it can also create box-office congestion and strategic scheduling disputes among distributors and producers. Observers will watch opening-weekend performance and word-of-mouth closely, as outcomes will influence distribution decisions for the remainder of the year.
