Residents of Russia’s easternmost regions welcomed 2026 ahead of the rest of the country as festivities began across Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and Kamchatka Krai. The nine-hour time difference with Moscow put midnight in the Far East while it was still mid‑afternoon in the capital, and towns from Anadyr to Pevek staged public events to greet the new year.

Russia New Year 2026 First Celebrations in Chukotka and Kamchatka

Across Chukotka, communities marked the night of 31 December with concerts, traditional circle dances and extended dance marathons. In Anadyr the main square will host street festivities from 01:00, followed by a 2,026 metre fun run on 1 January at 13:00. Pevek, the northernmost town in Russia, officially opened its celebration at 01:30 when Father Frost and the folkloric figure known as the Fire Horse led a giant circle dance. The Pevek programme also features interactive games and a special community element: audio greetings recorded in advance by residents.

Smaller settlements joined the festivities in force. In Egvekinot public celebrations started at 01:00 on the central square and later moved indoors to the local House of Culture. Bilibino began its programme at 01:30 on the town square, while other villages staged local concerts and family events through the night.

Kamchatka Krai also opened a large New Year programme in its regional capital, Petropavlovsk‑Kamchatsky, but organisers adapted events in response to severe weather. Authorities reported that precipitation since the start of December had exceeded the seasonal norm by 316 percent, with the most recent storm from 26 to 29 December leaving 106 millimetres of precipitation and snowdrifts up to 1.5 metres high. The storms caused intermittent power outages in some districts, prompting the temporary cancellation or postponement of school activities and children’s New Year performances.

Despite those challenges, the city’s evening celebrations on 31 December went ahead from 22:00 with performances by leading local ensembles, contests and interactive attractions. Food courts operated throughout the night and visitors were offered hot tea. After the midnight fireworks the programme continued until 02:00 to allow families and guests to enjoy the festivities safely.

Kamchatka’s governor, Vladimir Solodov, reflected on a testing year for the region. He noted that 2025 had brought earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and severe weather, and said authorities had learned important lessons and would continue to work to strengthen the region’s resilience. “As we wish for a brighter year ahead, we also know that rebuilding and development will require hard work and unity,” he said.

As time zones roll forward across the Russian Far East, residents in Magadan and Sakhalin and the eastern districts of Yakutia will celebrate the new year an hour later, followed by Primorye, Khabarovsk Krai and the Jewish Autonomous Oblast two hours after Chukotka. When Moscow reached 18:00 local time, festivities moved on to Amur Oblast, Zabaykalsky Krai and central areas of Yakutia, with Buryatia celebrating at 19:00 Moscow time.

The early New Year gatherings in Chukotka and Kamchatka combined community traditions with public safety measures, reflecting a wider regional emphasis on recovery and continuity after a year of natural challenges.

Key Takeaways:

  • Chukotka and Kamchatka, Russia’s easternmost regions, were the first to welcome 2026 with public festivities across towns and villages.
  • Events include concerts, mass dances, a 2,026-metre fun run in Anadyr and community audio greetings in Pevek.
  • Kamchatka held celebrations despite severe weather, heavy snowfall and some power outages that disrupted schools and programmes.
  • Regional leaders emphasised resilience and rebuilding after a year of natural challenges.
