Jaishankar Meets Tarique Rahman as India Bangladesh Relations Strengthen

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar travelled to Dhaka on Wednesday and met Tarique Rahman, acting chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and son of the late former prime minister Khaleda Zia, to convey India’s condolences on behalf of the government and people of India. The visit came as Jaishankar attended funeral proceedings for Khaleda Zia, who died after a prolonged illness at the age of 80.

India Bangladesh relations gain diplomatic reinforcement

During the meeting, Jaishankar handed over a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed confidence that Khaleda Zia’s vision and values would continue to inform the development of bilateral partnership. In a post on X, Jaishankar said he had conveyed “deepest condolences on behalf of the Government and people of India” and noted the importance of sustaining constructive ties between the two countries.

Khaleda Zia was Bangladesh’s first female prime minister and a defining figure in the nation’s modern political history. She served three terms in office and is widely credited with helping to restore democratic governance after years of military rule. Her funeral prayer was scheduled for 2pm at the South Plaza of Bangladesh’s National Parliament Building, with millions of mourners expected to attend and large crowds already assembling to offer Namaz-e-Janaza.

Security was markedly increased for the event. Local authorities deployed more than 10,000 police and Armed Police Battalion personnel, with army contingents positioned at key locations. The heightened security presence reflected both the scale of public interest and the authorities’ aim of ensuring the ceremony proceeded safely and respectfully.

The funeral arrangements include burial beside Khaleda Zia’s husband, former president Ziaur Rahman, at his mausoleum in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. Dignitaries and senior figures from across Bangladesh’s political spectrum were expected to attend, underscoring the national significance of the event.

Analysts say Jaishankar’s presence in Dhaka and his meeting with Tarique Rahman underline India’s desire to maintain strong, steady relations with Bangladesh during a period of national mourning. Diplomatic gestures at moments of high emotion can help reaffirm trust and continuity, and the delivery of a personal message from the prime minister is a traditional but tangible sign of respect.

Beyond the immediate condolence, both capitals have a history of cooperation on trade, connectivity, security and cultural exchanges. Officials in New Delhi and Dhaka have in recent years expanded cross-border linkages, including initiatives on power, infrastructure and people-to-people contact. Observers expect that officials will seek to preserve momentum on those shared priorities even as they pay tribute to Khaleda Zia’s legacy.

For India, sustaining constructive engagement with Bangladesh serves multiple strategic and economic interests. For Bangladesh, recognition of national figures and careful diplomatic handling contribute to domestic stability and international goodwill. The meeting between Jaishankar and Tarique Rahman therefore exemplifies diplomatic protocol during a sensitive moment while signalling continuity in bilateral cooperation.

Jaishankar’s Dhaka visit was part of a brief official itinerary centred on the funeral. By publicly acknowledging Khaleda Zia’s contributions and offering condolences at the highest level, India reinforced a long-standing practice of respectful diplomatic engagement with its immediate neighbour.
