A 24-year-old nurse in Nigeria is seeking N18 million to pay for urgent brain surgery, according to a fundraising appeal reported by News Express. The appeal, organised by family members and colleagues, says the young healthcare worker requires specialist neurosurgical intervention that is not affordable without outside support.

Nigerian nurse brain surgery

The family says the condition developed rapidly and that medical advice recommends surgery as the best chance to prevent further deterioration. Hospital clinicians are understood to have outlined the costs involved, which include the surgical procedure, anaesthesia, post-operative care and a period of rehabilitation.

Colleagues who work with the nurse described her as dedicated and well regarded by patients. They launched the fundraising drive to ensure the operation can go ahead without delay. Community contributions have been arriving in small amounts, but organisers say the total required remains substantial.

Access to specialised neurosurgical care can be limited and costly in parts of Nigeria, particularly when advanced diagnostics and post-operative rehabilitation are needed. Cases that require immediate intervention often depend on family resources or public appeals, underlining gaps in healthcare financing for critical procedures.

Health advocates say incidents like this expose the broader issue of affordability and availability of specialist treatment. “When nurses and other frontline workers cannot obtain timely care, it raises questions about the protections in place for healthcare staff and the funding available for critical services,” one campaigner commented.

The appeal has prompted offers of moral and logistical support from local charities and professional associations. However, campaign organisers stress that the immediate priority is raising the funds needed to secure the scheduled operation slot and to cover expected hospital costs.

Those coordinating the appeal are urging members of the public and philanthropic organisations to assist. They say that timely contributions will directly affect the young nurse’s chances of a full recovery and a return to work. Specific details about payment channels and beneficiary information have been published on the original News Express appeal page linked in the report.

While fundraising continues, clinicians involved are monitoring the patient’s condition closely. The family has expressed gratitude for the support received so far and emphasised the urgency of meeting the full target to avoid delays that could complicate treatment.

Longer-term solutions advocated by health policy specialists include expanding social health insurance coverage, improving employer support for healthcare workers and strengthening hospital funding for emergency specialist procedures. For now, the immediate task for the nurse’s supporters is to close the funding gap and enable the surgery to proceed.

The case has gathered attention across professional networks and the local community. Supporters say that beyond the medical imperative, there is a sense of collective responsibility to help a young healthcare worker who has served patients during routine shifts and challenging periods alike.

  • Relatives and colleagues have launched a fundraising appeal to meet medical and hospital costs.
  • The case highlights gaps in access to specialised care and the reliance on community fundraising for treatment.
  • Supporters are urging public contributions to help secure timely surgery for the young nurse.
