Kazakhstan road closures halt freight and public transport in two regions

The national roads operator KazAvtozhol has issued traffic restrictions across two Kazakh regions as severe weather forces authorities to limit movement on a major interregional highway. The measures, announced on 31 December, affect freight and public transport and aim to preserve safety on snow-affected stretches of road.

Kazakhstan road closures and affected routes

The restrictions apply to sections of the republican road linking Astana and Almaty via Karaganda. In Akmola region the closure covers the Astana – Karaganda (bypass) route from kilometre 30 to 92, between PVP Zhibek Zholy and the border with Karaganda region. In Karaganda region the limit continues from kilometre 92 to 164, between the Akmola border and PVP Temirtau. Both sections have been closed to heavy goods vehicles and public transport until conditions improve.

KazAvtozhol said the temporary limits were introduced in response to rapidly deteriorating weather, which has reduced visibility and raised the risk of accidents. Local road teams have been mobilised to monitor conditions and clear drifted snow, but officials warned that recovery work will depend on a short window of milder weather and safe working conditions for crews.

Impact on travel and logistics

The closures will disrupt long-haul freight movements that use the Astana–Karaganda corridor and could cause delays for scheduled public bus services. Logistics companies operating in central Kazakhstan are likely to reroute where possible, but alternative paths are longer and may not accommodate heavy vehicles. Road operators urged shippers and passengers to postpone non-essential journeys until the restrictions are lifted.

Emergency services and local authorities remain on alert. KazAvtozhol recommended that anyone travelling in affected regions check official updates, carry winter emergency kits and avoid attempting to drive through restricted sections. Vehicle drivers breaking the temporary ban may face enforcement measures if they endanger themselves or obstruct clearance operations.

Estimated reopening and official guidance

Authorities have given an estimated reopening time of 09:00 on 1 January 2026, subject to improvement in weather and road conditions. That timetable is provisional; KazAvtozhol emphasised that safety will determine the final decision and that motorists should follow bulletins issued by regional traffic services.

The winter closure follows a pattern of seasonal disruption across Kazakhstan’s central and northern regions, where heavy snowfall and strong winds can quickly degrade road surfaces. Transport planners say regular investments in snow-clearing capacity and road maintenance remain crucial to keeping key arteries open during cold months.

For the latest information, motorists and carriers should consult the KazAvtozhol website or regional traffic authorities before setting out. Local radio and traffic apps may also provide real-time updates on road status and diversion advice.

Key Takeaways:

  • Authorities have imposed Kazakhstan road closures affecting freight and public transport across Akmola and Karaganda regions.
  • Restrictions cover the Astana–Karaganda route between km 30–164, with staged limits for different sections.
  • The national roads operator KazAvtozhol announced an estimated reopening on 1 January 2026 at 09:00; motorists are advised to seek updates.
