Chandigarh is embarking on a substantial infrastructure programme worth more than Rs 1,000 crore that will upgrade schools, hospitals, sports facilities, police stations, courts and urban mobility across the union territory. More than 25 projects are at various stages — planned, under execution or about to start — with clearly defined budgets and timelines to ensure time‑bound delivery and improved public services.
Chandigarh infrastructure development and key projects
The roster of works is broad. In the education sector, new hostel blocks and academic wings at institutions such as PEC, GMSSS and CCET will add hundreds of student rooms, classrooms and vocational facilities. Notable projects include a G+6 boys’ hostel at PEC, a 320‑room extension to Vindhya Girls’ Hostel and new academic centres at PGGC‑11 and GMSSS.
Healthcare upgrades include a 50‑bed critical care block at Manimajra with emergency, ICU, operating theatre and diagnostic facilities, and MBBS hostels at GMCH‑48 to house medical students. A Mother & Child Care Centre in Sector 32A, scheduled for completion by March 2027, will expand maternal and neonatal services.
Sports infrastructure will receive a significant push. Plans include an FIH‑approved astro turf hockey ground in Sector 18 with LED lighting and a comprehensive Rs 120 crore sports complex in Sector 42 featuring a swimming pool block, multipurpose hall and a girls’ hostel.
Public safety and justice will be strengthened through new and upgraded police stations, expansion of the Model Jail to add court rooms and administrative space, and multi‑level parking for the district courts. Urban mobility projects include a 1.3‑km elevated corridor on Madhya Marg to ease congestion and a pedestrian subway linking PGI and Panjab University equipped with lifts for safer crossings.
Administrative and transport facilities also feature prominently. The new Deputy Commissioner’s office will rise as a seven‑storey building with three basements, while a multi‑level parking facility at GMCH‑32 will accommodate more than 1,350 cars. The fourth CTU bus depot‑cum‑workshop at Raipur Kalan will bolster public transport capacity.
Most projects carry specific completion targets. For example, extensions to student hostels at PEC and Government College, Sector 46, are due by February 2026; multi‑level judicial parking and MBBS hostels are slated for completion in 2026; and several police stations and school projects are scheduled through 2027.
UT Engineering and Education Secretary Prerna Puri said the administration is closely monitoring progress to ensure quality construction and adherence to timelines. Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria affirmed the commitment to develop world‑class facilities, noting that funding is not a constraint and that the focus remains on timely execution and public convenience.
The programme aims to reinforce Chandigarh’s stature as India’s first planned city and to deliver tangible improvements in daily life — from better classrooms and healthcare to safer streets and enhanced sports infrastructure. If projects are delivered on schedule, the investments will boost local employment, student accommodation and municipal services while improving urban connectivity and public safety.
