The Egyptian Ministry of Awqaf has reported a landmark year for its Quran programmes in 2025, announcing a total of 816,044 Quran sessions held across the country. Under the direction of Dr Osama al-Azhari, the ministry says the output represents an unprecedented level of public participation in recitation, memorisation and teaching initiatives during the year.
Activities took place across a broad network of institutions, including formal maqra’at (recitation circles), memorisation offices, centres for recitation, structured “Correct Your Recitation” sessions and teaching councils for senior reciters. The ministry highlighted that its work aimed to spread Quranic sciences, correct recitation and prepare skilled readers and teachers.
Egypt Quran activities 2025
The ministry recorded 301,096 maqra’at sessions of various types, covering imam-led circles, community sessions, model maqra’at and specialised readings. Women-only sessions and early-morning recitation groups were among the formats listed, as was the dedicated sura al-Kahf recitation at the large national mosque in Cairo. The figures point to strong grassroots engagement and regular, scientifically structured study circles.
In addition, a total of 203,531 sessions were logged for reading councils, centres for recitation and the “Correct Your Recitation” programme. These activities included sessions with senior readers, practical training in tajweed rules and correction programmes that the ministry says helped tens of thousands of worshippers across Egyptian governorates improve their recitation.
Memorisation offices continued to play a central educational role, hosting 311,417 memorisation circles. These covered state-run memorisation offices, stipend-supported centres and remote memorisation schemes operating to approved timetables. The ministry also staged 46 devotional evenings to reinforce spiritual identity linked to Quranic recitation.
Competitions formed a significant part of the ministry’s outreach this year. The 32nd Global Quran Competition for 1447 AH/2025 AD concluded after several local and central selection phases, with participants from inside and outside Egypt. The ministry invited representatives from 104 countries to participate and awarded prizes totalling EGP 13,850,000, a sum the ministry cited as evidence of Egypt’s leading international role in supporting Quranic scholarship and recitation.
Locally, the ministry launched a national televised competition called “State of Recitation” in partnership with the United Media Services company. Panels of senior readers and voice experts held auditions across seven governorates, testing more than 14,000 contestants and advancing a group of finalists to a national stage. The initiative aims to identify and train outstanding Quranic voices for both religious and media presentation.
Further measures included the completion of the first remote memorisation competition for students, the inaugural contest for recitation centre pupils, and the accreditation of 55 imams specialised in reading variant Quranic transmissions. The ministry also completed preliminary interviews for candidates seeking enrolment in the 2025–2026 Quran tutor training centres.
Local partnerships remained important. The ministry collaborated with the Mohamed Galal Charity Foundation on a Quranic and devotional competition for Greater Cairo on the occasion of the Prophet’s birthday, and it sponsored several provincial contests with civil society groups to broaden participation.
Ministry officials said the 2025 outputs reflect an intentional strategy to expand access to Quranic learning, raise recitation standards and cultivate a new generation of skilled reciters and tutors who can serve Egypt and the wider Muslim world.
