Egypt has begun disbursing a nationwide Christmas grant worth EGP 299,286,000 to informal workers registered with the Ministry of Labour, the ministry announced. The payment will reach 199,524 beneficiaries across all 27 governorates as part of the state’s periodic support measures tied to official and religious occasions.

The payments are being made from the Central Account for the Welfare of Informal Workers in line with directives from the country’s political leadership and as part of a broader social protection strategy. Labour Minister Mohamed Gibran said the grants are intended to provide immediate relief to households that rely on irregular income and to bolster living standards during periods of rising costs.
According to the ministry, this grant is one of six payments issued to informal labour over the course of the year. The calendar includes distributions for Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Labour Day, the Prophet’s Birthday and the Christmas celebration that is now under way.
Ministry officials emphasised that the value of the regular grant has recently seen a significant rise after a presidential decision announced during Labour Day celebrations. The one-off increase lifted the per-person payment from EGP 500 to EGP 1,500, a threefold boost that officials said reflects the state’s commitment to easing the cost burden on vulnerable workers.
Payments are being channelled through the ministry’s dedicated central account, which officials say improves transparency and traceability. The ministry also stressed that payroll and distribution mechanisms are being refined to ensure timely delivery and to prevent duplication or fraud.
Labour Minister Mohamed Gibran highlighted efforts to modernise and expand the ministry’s database of informal workers. The aim is to identify additional eligible recipients and to streamline the application and payment process. He said the database updates and improved disbursement systems are subject to direct oversight from senior political authorities.
Experts and policy-makers point out that regular, predictable top-up payments can act as a stabilising force for low-income households that lack formal social insurance. While modest in size for each individual payment, the aggregation of six grants a year provides a recurring boost to consumption and helps households manage shocks.
Still, analysts note that longer-term improvements in labour market formality, access to social insurance and steady employment opportunities will be required to reduce vulnerability permanently. For now, the expanded grant represents a notable short-term policy response designed to reach workers outside the formal safety net.
The ministry reiterated its commitment to widening the reach of the programme and refining the method of delivery. Officials said further rounds of registration and verification will continue so that support reaches those most in need, while administrative reforms aim to cut delays and enhance accountability.
