Thousands of visitors marked the turn of the year at Beijing Yuyang International Ski Resort in Pinggu District, capital of China, with skiers taking to the slopes on the evening of 31 December 2025. Local authorities and resort operators said the event reflected rising domestic demand for winter leisure activities and an expanded calendar of seasonal events designed to draw families and tourists outside the capital.

Beijing New Year celebration brings winter tourism boost

The New Year celebrations in Pinggu combined recreational skiing with a programme of family-friendly activities, food stalls and light displays. Resort officials reported strong bookings in the run-up to the holiday, noting that easier transport links from central Beijing and targeted promotions had helped broaden the visitor base beyond traditional winter sports enthusiasts.

“This season we have seen more first-time skiers and families choosing short, experience-led breaks rather than long trips,” a resort spokesperson said. “Events such as our New Year welcome not only support the local economy but also introduce more people to winter sports in a safe environment.”

Pinggu District has invested in infrastructure improvements and service upgrades to accommodate growing visitor numbers. Organisers emphasised safety, with trained staff on patrol and public information on slope conditions. Resorts also said they were balancing visitor experience with environmental considerations, managing snowmaking and energy use to limit impact on local resources.

Analysts say such New Year activities feed into a broader trend of domestic tourism recovery and diversification. After the pandemic years, Chinese travellers have increasingly sought short-haul leisure options, with winter destinations receiving renewed interest. The combination of accessible facilities, seasonal events and family-oriented programming has helped resorts sustain year-on-year visitor growth.

Local businesses in Pinggu reported a busy holiday period. Hotels and guesthouses reported higher occupancy rates, while restaurants and retailers catering to tourists noted a boost in short-term spending. Municipal officials described coordinated marketing efforts with travel platforms as a contributing factor to the area’s stronger-than-expected seasonal turnout.

Visitors praised the well-organised celebrations and the opportunity to usher in the New Year outdoors. Many families used the occasion to introduce children to winter sports, with beginners’ slopes and instructors available for lessons. The event’s relaxed atmosphere emphasised leisure and community rather than competition.

Looking ahead, resort managers said they aim to broaden their programming to include cultural events, winter festivals and off-season attractions to sustain momentum. Continued investment in transport links and hospitality services will be important if Pinggu is to maintain its appeal as a short-break destination for Beijing residents and domestic tourists.

For now, the Pinggu New Year gathering offers a window into how local authorities and private operators are shaping leisure opportunities around the capital, using seasonal celebrations to generate economic activity while promoting inclusive access to winter sports.

Key Takeaways:

  • Skiers and families gathered at Beijing Yuyang International Ski Resort in Pinggu to greet the New Year.
  • The Beijing New Year celebration highlights growth in domestic winter tourism and local leisure spending.
  • Local authorities and resorts say improved facilities and transport links are attracting more visitors each winter.
  • Events combine recreation with safety and environmental measures to support sustainable tourism.
