India Approves DPR Tender for Wayanad Bypass Road

The central government has approved a tender to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Chippilithode–Maruthilavu–Thalipuzha bypass in Wayanad, Kerala, offering hope to residents and travellers who face daily difficulties on the existing ghat section. The move by the Ministry of Surface Transport marks a key procedural step before construction can begin.

Wayanad bypass road to ease ghat bottleneck

The proposed 14.5 kilometre bypass is designed to divert traffic away from the most hazardous hairpin stretches of the national highway that pass through the Wayanad ghat. With no airport, rail or waterway access to Wayanad, road connectivity is vital. Repeated repairs to the colonial-era ghat have failed to provide a long-term solution as traffic volumes and vehicle sizes have risen sharply over the years.

Local campaigners and an action committee that has pressed the issue for more than five years welcomed the DPR approval. Their sustained protests, petitions and inspections organised with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) helped move files and secure the tender invitation. The DPR phase will produce the technical studies, cost estimates and environmental assessments required for the project to progress.

Officials say the bypass will link Chippilithode to Thalipuzha via Maruthilavu and deliver a route with fewer sharp bends, reducing travel time and increasing safety. The alignment includes roughly two kilometres that pass through forest land across Kozhikode and Wayanad districts. Authorities have previously considered constructing a tunnel for part of the forest stretch as an alternative to an open alignment.

Attempts to advance the bypass go back decades. Funding for preliminary work was once set aside in the state budget when P. J. Joseph served as Public Works Minister, but the project did not proceed at the time. Renewed local agitation and follow-up by the action committee brought the matter to the attention of NHAI, which later decided to upgrade the Malaparamba to Muthanga reach to four lanes and to include the bypass within national highway development plans.

Residents along the proposed alignment have already signed consent forms indicating their willingness to surrender land for the road between Chippilithode and Maruthilavu. That local cooperation will speed land acquisition, but authorities will still need to complete environmental clearances and detailed surveys during the DPR phase. The process will also examine mitigation measures for forest impacts and road safety features.

Once the DPR is finalised and approved, the next steps will include securing construction funding, obtaining clearances and issuing the construction tender. Officials have indicated that the central approval of the DPR tender is the first of these steps and does not yet signal immediate construction start.

For a district that relies almost exclusively on roads for movement of people and goods, the bypass represents more than a transport project. Local leaders say it could reduce accidents, improve the flow of tourism and commerce, and support more reliable access for emergency services. The community remains cautiously optimistic that the DPR phase will translate into timely construction and long-term relief for travellers across the Wayanad ghat.

Key Takeaways:

  • Central ministry approves tender for a DPR to build the 14.5 km Wayanad bypass road, promising relief for ghat congestion.
  • The Wayanad bypass road will link Chippilithode, Maruthilavu and Thalipuzha and cut dangerous hairpin turns on the national highway.
  • National Highways Authority plans four‑lane upgrades and earlier local consensus secured land for the route; environmental measures and a tunnel option previously considered.
