Haldwani is set to see a wave of tangible improvements in 2026 after a year in which major water, sewerage, road and health works reached advanced stages. Local officials say the coming months will deliver benefits that residents will experience day to day, from reliable tap water to improved healthcare and better transport links.
Haldwani infrastructure upgrades will bring reliable water and safer roads
Project directors report that 380 km of new water mains were laid in 2025 and the remaining 320 km are scheduled for completion this year. Once finished, the city should receive adequate water around the clock, seven days a week. Improved pressure is expected to allow water to reach up to a third storey of buildings without pumping, addressing a long-standing supply problem for many households.
Sewerage works have also progressed, with 120 km of main lines installed and another 57 km planned within six months. Thirteen new tubewells and 14 new overhead and conventional tanks are due to be completed in 2026. Drainage projects completed last year have already started to ease flooding, and targeted widening of local drains will tackle waterlogging in vulnerable neighbourhoods.
The municipal programme includes a major road repair drive. Officials plan to resurface around 400 km of damaged streets and repair 15 junctions to make roads free of potholes and safer for motorists and pedestrians.
Health expansion will boost services and specialist care in Haldwani
Healthcare capacity is set to increase significantly. The state medical college and affiliated hospital will expand to a total of 900 beds in 2026. Work completed in 2025 included a 60-bed TB chest hospital and an additional 90 beds. Thirteen departments, including oncology, orthopaedics and dermatology, will gain new postgraduate seats, taking total PG seats to 82. A catheterisation laboratory is already in place and recruitment of cardiology, urology and neurology super speciality doctors is planned for this year.
Sporting education and events to benefit local youth and tourism
Sporting infrastructure has given Haldwani national exposure. The Goulapaar stadium hosted national and international events in 2025, and work to establish the state’s first sports university is expected to begin in 2026. The new university will offer courses such as BPEd and tie-ups with national sports institutes, allowing young athletes to train and study locally.
Organisers point to recent events at the international stadium, including national games and fencing championships, as evidence that the city can support high-profile competitions, which in turn can attract visitors and boost local businesses.
Transport projects aim to improve connectivity
Transport improvements completed in 2025 included a new heli-service and expanded road transport capacity. Roadways authorities say a hill depot at Kathgodam is under construction and will begin serving passengers in the coming months. Railway officials are preparing proposals for a Vande Bharat express between Kathgodam and Delhi, which would reduce travel times and improve connections to the national rail network.
Longer term projects such as ring road proposals, bypass routes and a ropeway to Nainital remain under consideration or delayed by land and clearance issues, but municipal leaders say 2026 will deliver several projects that directly affect residents’ daily lives.
Officials emphasise that while some major projects await final approvals, the combination of water, health, road and transport upgrades scheduled for this year will provide immediate improvements in living standards for Haldwani’s citizens.
