The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) national leadership has moved to quash a purported suspension of its Kano State chairman, Alhaji Hashimu Suleiman Dungurawa, saying the action taken by members of the Gargari Ward in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area is misplaced and without effect.
In a statement released on 31 December and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bamofin Ladipo Johnson, the National Working Committee described the alleged suspension as “null, void and of no effect whatsoever” and condemned it in the strongest terms.
According to the statement, the committee considers the move by certain executive members in Gargari Ward to be a breach of the party’s constitution and an example of gross anti‑party activity. The national leadership said the action did not follow due process under the NNPP’s governing rules and therefore cannot stand.

NNPP Kano chairman suspension ruled invalid by national leadership
Johnson’s statement emphasised that the party’s internal discipline procedures must be respected and that decisions affecting state officers cannot be taken unilaterally by a ward executive. The national committee urged members to pursue grievances through established party mechanisms rather than public declarations that undermine party unity.
“The National Working Committee of the New Nigeria People’s Party condemns in the strongest terms the purported suspension of the Kano State Chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa. Such action is misplaced, undemocratic, null, void and of no effect whatsoever,” the statement read.
The NNPP went on to describe Dungurawa as a conscientious and hardworking chairman whose leadership and performance have contributed to the party’s progress in Kano State. The national body’s praise suggests the committee intends to reaffirm his position and authority within the state party structure.
Political analysts said the dispute highlights ongoing tensions within party structures at local level, a phenomenon not uncommon in Nigeria’s party politics. Localised disagreements can escalate quickly if they are aired publicly rather than resolved through internal channels, analysts noted, and national leaderships often intervene to prevent factional splits that could weaken a party ahead of elections.
For the NNPP, which has sought to expand its influence in Kano, maintaining a united front is likely to be a priority as it prepares for upcoming political contests. The national committee’s swift repudiation of the Gargari Ward announcement may be intended to deter similar actions by other ward officers and to reassure supporters of stability at state leadership level.
The statement did not set out any immediate disciplinary measures against the ward executives who announced the suspension. It did, however, warn that actions contravening the party constitution would be treated as anti‑party conduct and could attract sanctions if pursued.
Moving forward, the NNPP’s national leadership called on members to observe party procedures for raising concerns, to refrain from acts that could be interpreted as undermining elected officers, and to work collectively for the party’s advancement in Kano State. For now, at least, Hashimu Dungurawa remains recognised by the NNPP national body as the legitimate Kano State chairman.
