The Bharatiya Janata Party and its NDA allies secured a landmark victory in the recent municipal elections in Kerala, winning control of the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation for the first time in decades. Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a letter of congratulation to the newly elected mayor V.V. Rajesh and deputy mayor G.S. Asha Nath, praising the poll outcome as a demonstration of popular trust and urging the new administration to focus on urban development and good governance.

Thiruvananthapuram BJP victory signals shift in Kerala politics

In his letter Mr Modi described the result as an indication that citizens, particularly women and young voters, are ready for a fresh beginning. He framed the win as an endorsement of a politics he characterised as committed to national unity, corruption-free development and governance without favouritism. The prime minister also expressed the expectation that the local administration would work collaboratively to improve public services and the quality of urban life.

The letter referenced social reformers and local leaders whose ideas, Mr Modi said, should guide public service. He invoked the teachings of Narayan Guru, who advocated selfless service for the welfare of others, and mentioned Mahatma Ayyankali and Mannathu Padmanabhan for their emphasis on aiding marginalised people and empowering women. Mr Modi urged the mayor and the civic team to draw inspiration from these traditions while serving the city.

V.V. Rajesh responded to the prime minister’s message on the social platform X, calling the recognition a New Year gift for Kerala and crediting BJP workers for decades of sustained effort in the state. In his post the mayor said the political change in Thiruvananthapuram was the result of long-term dedication by party activists and supporters.

Political analysts say the BJP’s victory in the capital city of Kerala carries both symbolic and practical importance. Symbolically it signals the party’s growing traction in a state where the Left Democratic Front and the United Democratic Front have long dominated. Practically it hands the BJP an opportunity to deliver tangible improvements in municipal services, infrastructure and local administration ahead of future state-level contests.

The prime minister’s appeal for humility, compassion and decisive governance sets a clear agenda for the new civic administration. Local priorities cited in public statements include improving waste management, expanding basic services, strengthening urban infrastructure and enhancing ‘ease of living’ for residents.

Observers will watch how the newly constituted corporation translates electoral momentum into policy and delivery. For citizens, the most immediate test will be visible improvements in everyday services and transparent, accountable municipal leadership. For the BJP in Kerala, governing successfully in Thiruvananthapuram would provide momentum and a practical record to present to voters across the state.

As the mayor and deputy mayor prepare to take office, the prime minister reiterated his good wishes and called for governance guided by the principles of service to the people. The coming months will show whether the municipal victory brings the changes and renewed public confidence the party has promised.
