The Indian Railways is set to introduce the country’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train on the Guwahati–Kolkata corridor, a move that promises faster overnight travel and upgraded on-board comfort. Media reports indicate Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the service in mid-January 2026, with an inauguration likely on 17 or 18 January and commercial operations to begin within 15–20 days of the announcement.

Key features of the Vande Bharat sleeper train

The Vande Bharat sleeper train is presented as a modern overnight express designed for long-distance comfort. Officials say the train will travel at up to 160 kilometres per hour and will be fitted with European-style berths, bio-vacuum toilets, individual charging points, reading lights and automatic doors. Safety and passenger information systems include CCTV cameras and audio-visual announcements. The first-class coaches will offer hot-water bathing facilities, while pantry modules will be fully modular and provide regional cuisine options.

Designers have also included conveniences often associated with premium hotels. Passengers can expect night lights, folding tables and improved lavatory arrangements, with separate facilities for staff such as the pilot’s toilet. The Indian Railways has described the level of comfort as comparable to a five-star experience for travellers on overnight journeys.

Service details released by the railways indicate the train will depart from Guwahati and terminate in Kolkata, calling at several important stations along the way. Authorities have not released a full timetable but say the route will cover key urban centres connecting the northeast with eastern India, improving overnight connectivity and reducing travel time for many passengers.

Fare structures for the Vande Bharat sleeper train have been announced by railway officials. Ticket prices will vary by class: First AC passengers will pay approximately ₹3,600, Second AC fares are set at around ₹3,000 and Third AC at about ₹2,300. These fares place the service within a premium bracket for long-distance sleepers, reflecting the upgraded amenities and higher operating speeds.

Transport analysts note that the introduction of a Vande Bharat sleeper train on this corridor aligns with India’s broader strategy to modernise long-distance rail travel and expand premium offerings beyond daytime intercity services. The move may encourage greater rail modal share for overnight journeys, relieve pressure on existing mail and express services and contribute to regional economic activity by improving passenger mobility.

While rail officials confirm the key features and tentative inauguration dates, the exact station stops, full timetable and booking windows will be published on official Indian Railways portals ahead of the launch. Passengers seeking the first services are advised to monitor announcements from the Ministry of Railways and authorised ticketing platforms for confirmed schedules and reservations information.

The Vande Bharat sleeper train represents a notable addition to India’s expanding fleet of semi-high-speed trains and signals continued investment in passenger comfort, safety and speed on crucial long-distance routes. As the northeast and eastern regions gain a faster overnight link, travellers can expect a step change in how they plan and undertake intercity journeys across this corridor.

Key Takeaways:

  • India will introduce its first Vande Bharat sleeper train running between Guwahati and Kolkata, with inauguration expected around 17–18 January 2026.
  • Fares announced range from ₹2,300 for Third AC to ₹3,600 for First AC; the service will stop at several major stations en route.
  • Train features include European-style berths, bio-vacuum toilets, CCTV, charging points and a top speed of 160 kilometres per hour.
