The Haryana Cabinet has approved a government appointment for Santosh Kumari, the widow of Assistant Sub‑Inspector Sandeep Kumar Lathar, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced after a meeting on Thursday. The decision assigns her to the position of PGT Mathematics, Group B, at the Campus School of Maharshi Dayanand University in Rohtak.

Officials said the move follows the alleged suicide of Lathar, who was posted in the cyber cell at Rohtak and reportedly took his own life on 14 October. Lathar left a note that raised corruption allegations against late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who is said to have died by suicide at his Chandigarh residence on 7 October. The Cabinet decision to provide a state post to Santosh Kumari was presented by the chief minister as part of a wider package of measures discussed at the meeting.
Santosh Kumari will be appointed to the PGT Mathematics post under Group B at the Campus School, MDU Rohtak. The appointment is being portrayed by the state administration as an act of social support for the family of a deceased public servant and has been framed within efforts to provide financial stability to affected households.
The Cabinet also approved an expansion of the Deen Dayal Lado Lakshmi Yojana, a scheme that provides monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,100 to eligible women in Haryana. Previously the benefit was available to women from families with an annual income of up to Rs 1 lakh. Under the revised criteria, the benefit will also be extended to women whose children secure more than 80 per cent marks in Classes 10 and 12.
Chief Minister Saini said more than one lakh women have applied for the scheme since the expansion was announced and that roughly eight lakh women are already receiving the monthly support. The Lado Lakshmi Yojana is open to both married and unmarried women aged between 23 and 60, provided they meet the income threshold.
Mr Saini framed the package of measures as consistent with the state’s Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative. He said the sex ratio in Haryana had improved to 923 in 2025, a figure he cited as evidence of progress on gender indicators. The government’s linking of financial support to academic performance is intended to incentivise education while widening the scheme’s reach.
Reaction to the Cabinet decision has been mixed. Supporters welcomed the appointment as a compassionate response to a tragic event and a signal that public servants’ families will receive state assistance. Critics cautioned that ad hoc appointments risk perceptions of favouritism unless they follow transparent eligibility and recruitment norms.
Officials from the education and social welfare departments said the appointment process will follow statutory rules for Group B posts, and that details of the recruitment and posting will be communicated once formalities are completed. The government has indicated it will monitor implementation closely to ensure compliance with employment regulations.
As the state moves to combine targeted welfare measures with administrative appointments, the episode underlines the challenges regional governments face in balancing immediate compensation for bereaved families with the need for clear, rules‑based hiring processes.
