India has established a dedicated, toll-free helpline — 1930 — for reporting cybercrime and online financial fraud. Launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the service operates nationwide and is available 24 hours a day to assist victims of scams, unauthorised transactions, OTP fraud and other digital offences. Authorities have simplified access to support by replacing the earlier 155260 number with the shorter, easier-to-remember 1930.

How the 1930 cybercrime helpline works

Callers can dial 1930 from anywhere in India to report incidents of cyber fraud. The helpline connects complainants with officials who can record the complaint and advise on immediate steps. Alternatively, victims can register online at cybercrime.gov.in, the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, to file a detailed report.

When reporting an incident, the helpline will typically request the complainant’s name, mobile number, bank account details where relevant, transaction IDs and a clear account of what happened. Providing complete and accurate information speeds up the response and increases the chances of tracing transactions, freezing accounts, or blocking suspicious devices or IDs.

When to call 1930

Citizens should call 1930 if they experience any of the following:

  • UPI or payment app fraud leading to financial loss.
  • Digital extortion or coercion via video calls or messages.
  • Unauthorised withdrawals or transfers from bank accounts or digital wallets.
  • OTP-related scams where one-time passwords have been misused to gain access to accounts.

The helpline is designed to be the first point of contact in such emergencies, enabling victims to quickly register complaints and seek guidance on the next steps, including coordination with banks and law enforcement.

Practical steps after a suspected fraud

After contacting 1930 or filing a report online, take these immediate actions to protect your finances and evidence:

  • Contact your bank or payment provider to request transaction blocks or account holds.
  • Change passwords and revoke app permissions linked to affected accounts.
  • Preserve all messages, screenshots, call records and transaction receipts as evidence.
  • Note the complaint reference provided by the helpline or the portal for follow-up.

Reporting quickly improves the likelihood of recovery or at least prevents further loss. The helpline’s round‑the‑clock availability means victims can act at any time, which is especially important given the rapid nature of online fraud.

Cyber threats continue to evolve, and awareness remains a crucial defence. Saving the 1930 helpline number in your phone and familiarising yourself with the cybercrime.gov.in portal will help you respond swiftly if you or someone you know becomes a target. If in doubt, contact the helpline and follow the guidance provided by officials to protect your finances and personal data.

Key Takeaways:

  • 1930 is a toll-free Indian government helpline for reporting online financial fraud and cybercrime, available 24/7.
  • Citizens can report UPI scams, digital extortion, OTP fraud and unauthorised transactions by calling or via cybercrime.gov.in.
  • Callers should provide personal and transaction details to enable rapid action; keep evidence and notify banks immediately.
