President Prabowo Subianto visited two disaster-affected regions in Sumatra as the calendar turned from 2025 to 2026, spending the New Year period alongside survivors and inspecting recovery efforts.

Prabowo Sumatra visit brings reassurance to survivors

On 30 December 2025, the president travelled to North Sumatra’s Tapanuli Selatan to inspect the construction of a Bailey bridge across the Garoga River and to visit the Kodam I/Bukit Barisan health post in Batu Hula, Batang Toru district. Prabowo remained at the health post through New Year’s Eve, spending the night with residents displaced by recent events. Reports noted few formal barriers or strict protocol as the president greeted residents and shared the countdown to 2026 with children and families.

Following the Tapanuli Selatan visit, on 1 January 2026 Prabowo toured Danantara housing projects in Aceh Tamiang and convened a limited cabinet meeting with senior ministers, including the Minister of State Secretariat, the Cabinet Secretary, the Foreign Minister, the Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, the Home Minister and the Defence Minister. The meeting aimed to coordinate recovery priorities and follow up on logistics for affected communities.

Prof. Dwikorita Karnawati, a professor of Environmental Geology and Disaster Mitigation at Gadjah Mada University, commented on the visits in a special edition of Sapa Indonesia Pagi uploaded to the KompasTV YouTube channel. Dwikorita said the Prabowo Sumatra visit carried significant symbolic weight for survivors, particularly because it occurred at the turn of the year.

“A visit by the nation’s top leader at a meaningful moment such as the New Year can be deeply significant,” she said. “For survivors and displaced families, it offers comfort and demonstrates a leader’s compassion.”

Observers say that direct leadership engagement in the immediate aftermath of disasters can help restore public confidence and ensure that response measures receive sustained attention from central government. By joining residents without strict ceremony, the president’s presence sought to convey solidarity and to assess conditions on the ground first-hand.

Local authorities and military medical teams briefed the president on the status of temporary shelters, health services and infrastructure repairs. In Tapanuli Selatan, the Bailey bridge construction was highlighted as a priority to re-establish vital transportation links. In Aceh Tamiang, the president reviewed Danantara housing meant to provide safer accommodation for those displaced.

While officials continue logistics and recovery work, experts stress the importance of systematic follow-up, including durable housing, access to healthcare, and livelihood support for affected families. The visits are likely to expedite interministerial coordination and maintain public focus on rebuilding efforts.

The Prabowo Sumatra visit underlines a hands-on approach to disaster management early in 2026, combining symbolic reassurance with operational oversight as authorities and communities move from emergency response to recovery and reconstruction.

Key Takeaways:

  • President Prabowo visited disaster-affected areas in Tapanuli Selatan and Aceh Tamiang during New Year 2026, mingling directly with survivors.
  • Prof. Dwikorita Karnawati described the Prabowo Sumatra visit as an expression of a leader’s compassion that brings reassurance to displaced residents.
  • Visits included inspection of Bailey bridge works, a military health post and newly built Danantara housing, alongside a limited cabinet meeting in Aceh.
  • The visits signal hands-on governance during crisis response and aim to boost morale among affected communities.
