The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has thrown its full weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s New Year address, declaring that the state will not be diverted from the administration’s reform agenda. In a statement, the party insisted there would be no retreat from reform and no distraction from those it described as failed alternatives.
Tinubu New Year message
Speaking on behalf of the party, Mogaji (Hon) Seye Oladejo said the president’s address served as a reminder that leadership requires making difficult decisions in the national interest. He argued that many critics had chosen to avoid such choices when the country faced prolonged decline, and were now quick to condemn reforms from the sidelines.
“President Tinubu’s New Year address was a blunt reminder that leadership is not an entertainment contest nor a popularity poll,” Oladejo said. He added that the president spoke with “the confidence of a man who understands both the depth of Nigeria’s challenges and the courage required to confront them.”
The Lagos APC welcomed the administration’s emphasis on fiscal responsibility and transparency, saying the era of economic escapism and governance by deception was over. The party described the Renewed Hope Agenda as a reset rather than a slogan, acknowledging that meaningful reform often entails sacrifice and short-term discomfort.
Oladejo highlighted what he termed early signs of progress. He pointed to stabilising macroeconomic indicators, a rebound in investor confidence, growing infrastructure investment, and measures aimed at improving national security. The statement asserted these outcomes were the result of firm leadership unwilling to compromise the nation’s future for short-term applause.
“These gains are not accidents; they are the early dividends of leadership that refuses to mortgage the future for applause,” the spokesman said. He also criticised opposition voices for what the party described as recycled excuses and empty rhetoric, arguing that many of those critics had been responsible for past decline.
As Nigeria’s commercial centre and its most populous state, Lagos will concentrate on advancing reforms that support economic growth and social stability. The Lagos APC said the state understands that progress demands discipline, patience, and sacrifice, and committed to defending and supporting the president’s direction without apology.
The party urged citizens to remain focused and resolute, reiterating that the road to national renewal required clarity of purpose and firm resolve. “There will be no retreat. There will be no distraction. Nigeria is moving forward whether the cynics like it or not,” the statement concluded.
Analysts say political backing from Lagos carries weight, given the state’s influence over commerce, finance, and public opinion. Continued support from regional power centres could help sustain momentum for economic reforms, provided the government maintains clear policy communication and delivers tangible improvements in security and living standards.
For now, the Lagos APC’s public endorsement signals a united front in support of the president’s stated priorities as the administration seeks to translate bold rhetoric into measurable outcomes across the country.
