Pinar del Río, Cuba — Since its inauguration in September, the island’s first dedicated shop supplying inputs for tobacco growers has attracted steady support from vegueros in Pinar del Río. The outlet, managed by the Tabaco Las Ovas logistics unit, has become a focal point for producers seeking materials to boost farm productivity and household living standards.
Cuban tobacco supply store boosts producer reinvestment
“We serve an average of 15 to 20 producers each day, depending on available offers,” said Luis Enrique Valdés González, director of the enterprise unit that operates the shop in the provincial capital. Under the Tabacuba group’s financing model, growers can use convertible currency (MLC) to buy items that support both their production cycle and family needs.
The shop stocks more than 75 product codes, reflecting requests from farmers across the province. Producers find a range of hardware and construction tools, electrical components, household appliances and photovoltaic systems on offer. The availability of solar panels has been particularly welcomed by cooperative members seeking reliable power for homes and small operations.
Producers travel from across the province to purchase supplies, and managers expect to open similar outlets in San Luis, San Juan y Martínez, Guane and Viñales to bring products closer to farming communities. The expansion aims to reduce travel time for growers and to increase uptake of materials that support planting and processing.
Local cooperative members praised the initiative for its practical benefits. Pedro Luis Plasencia, a member of the Gervasio Hernández credit and services cooperative, said he purchased solar panels, bicycles for workers and animal feed. “We can reinvest the MLC back into the tobacco campaign and into our quality of life,” he added.
Another veteran grower, Juan José Cordero from the Manuel Cordero cooperative, described the outlet as competitively priced and a good option for producers. Cordero, who has cultivated solanaceous crops for 22 years, highlighted the convenience and the ability to obtain essential supplies in one place.
The shop’s model connects a state-backed financing and supply system with on-the-ground agricultural needs. By allowing producers to purchase items in MLC, the initiative aims to streamline access to imported or higher-cost goods that were previously harder to obtain through local channels.
Officials overseeing the venture emphasise that the shop is responding directly to farmer demand. Broader rollout across the province would extend the benefits to smaller cooperatives and independent growers, supporting the tobacco harvest and the livelihoods tied to it.
As Pinar del Río prepares for the next planting and processing seasons, the store is positioned as a practical tool for sustaining production. For many vegueros, access to affordable tools, equipment and renewable energy systems could translate into more efficient operations and improved household conditions.
