India Investigates Lalu Yadav Land Ownership Allegations

The Bihar government has indicated it could take official action over alleged illegal land ownership connected to Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad Yadav, a development that may intensify scrutiny of the veteran politician.

Lalu Yadav land ownership: Department may take cognisance

Deputy Chief Minister and Revenue and Land Reforms Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha said departmental officers will act if a formal application is received through the ongoing land reform public welfare dialogue. The minister stressed that the government will not shy away from taking action on matters brought before the department and that any case will be processed in accordance with established procedures.

The immediate trigger for the minister’s remarks was a recent demand by Janata Dal (United) spokesperson and Legislative Council member Neeraj Kumar, who urged the government to investigate properties allegedly linked to Lalu Prasad Yadav. Mr Kumar’s call prompted officials and political observers to ask whether the administration would open a formal probe into the claims.

Mr Sinha, who is leading the revenue department, made clear that the department’s role is procedural: it will examine applications lodged under the land reform public welfare dialogue and initiate action if officials find grounds to proceed. He reiterated that the hearings are intended to give landowners and aggrieved parties a direct route to register grievances and seek timely redress.

The land reform public welfare dialogue is being held in several districts across Bihar. These district-level sessions allow residents to present complaints about land disputes, title irregularities and related issues directly to revenue department representatives. Mr Sinha has said he will continue to hold the sessions, which the administration describes as a way to tackle longstanding land problems and dismantle networks it calls land mafias.

In recent statements the deputy chief minister pledged sustained action against those engaged in unlawful land practices, saying his administration will pursue complaints while ensuring procedures are respected. He also thanked the people of Bihar for participating in the dialogue programme and urged them to bring forward genuine grievances so officials can address them swiftly.

Political analysts note that allegations involving high-profile figures tend to attract both legal scrutiny and political contestation. While the minister’s comments do not amount to a formal inquiry, they signal that the revenue department will respond if complaints are submitted through the prescribed channel. Any subsequent proceedings would follow departmental rules and could include verification of ownership documents, title checks and other administrative steps.

For now the matter remains at the stage of potential departmental action rather than an open investigation. The coming days will show whether petitions or complaints surface through the public welfare dialogue and whether officials find sufficient grounds to open formal proceedings. Until then, the controversy is likely to remain a point of political debate within Bihar.

Key Takeaways:

  • Bihar deputy chief minister says the revenue department may take cognisance of alleged land ownership linked to RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav.
  • Action would follow an application submitted through the land reform public welfare dialogue; officials will follow due process.
  • Vijay Kumar Sinha, overseeing revenue and land reform, is holding district-level dialogues to hear land grievances and pledged to continue action against land mafias.
  • The developments increase pressure on Lalu Yadav and could shape state-level political debate.
