On 2 January 2026, Bệnh viện Quân y 175, in coordination with Southern Helicopter Company, carried out an urgent helicopter evacuation of a critically ill fisherman from Nam Yết island in the Truong Sa archipelago to the mainland for advanced treatment.

The patient, working on vessel BĐ 97884, developed sudden symptoms on 31 December 2025. Crew members reported dizziness, limb weakness, slurred speech, choking on swallowing and a rapid clinical decline. He was initially treated at the island clinic on Nam Yết, but his condition worsened with reduced consciousness, complete right-sided paralysis and cardiac rhythm disturbances.

Remote consultation with specialists at Bệnh viện Quân y 175 concluded that the patient showed signs consistent with a large cerebral infarction, a life-threatening stroke that required immediate intervention. Given the high risk of death or permanent disability without prompt treatment, medical teams decided to transfer the patient to the military hospital on the mainland.

Vietnam medical evacuation

Late on 1 January 2026, a helicopter dispatched by Southern Helicopter Company flew to Nam Yết island to undertake the medevac. The airborne emergency team monitored the patient continuously, managing airways, supporting circulation and stabilising vital signs throughout the flight. The crew maintained close communication with receiving clinicians to ensure the hospital was prepared for immediate intensive care on arrival.

Following touchdown, the patient was taken straight to the Emergency Department at Bệnh viện Quân y 175 for specialised treatment. Military hospital staff prepared to continue advanced neurological and cardiac support, including imaging and interventions appropriate for a large stroke.

The operation illustrates the value of coordinated maritime and aviation medical capabilities in Vietnam, particularly for remote island populations. Quick remote diagnosis, timely decision-making and a well-executed air transfer can be decisive in life-threatening cases where specialist care is only available on the mainland.

Nam Yết is part of the Truong Sa archipelago in Khánh Hòa province, an area where access to comprehensive medical services is limited by distance and weather. In such settings, air rescue operations organised by military medical services and civilian aviation partners provide a vital link to emergency care. The case also highlights the role of telemedicine consultations between front-line clinics and larger hospitals in guiding urgent decisions.

Officials involved in the mission emphasised that stabilising patients during transit, coordinating with receiving teams and rapid handover on arrival were central to the outcome. The combined effort of island medical staff, the helicopter crew and the military hospital demonstrates an established protocol for maritime medical emergencies.

Bệnh viện Quân y 175 has a history of coordinating such evacuations and maintaining readiness to receive critical patients from remote islands. The swift response in this incident underscores continued investment in medical evacuation capacity and the importance of integrated civilian-military cooperation for civilian welfare in maritime regions.

Medical teams will continue to monitor the patient’s condition as he receives further treatment. Authorities have not released additional personal details, focusing instead on the successful coordination and rapid execution of the transfer.

Key Takeaways:

  • Vietnam medical evacuation airlifted a critically ill fisherman from Nam Yết, Truong Sa, to Bệnh viện Quân y 175 for urgent treatment.
  • The patient showed signs of a large cerebral infarction on 31 December 2025 and deteriorated rapidly, prompting remote consultation and evacuation.
  • Southern Helicopter Company and military medical teams coordinated the night flight on 1 January 2026 and maintained vital support during transit.
  • Emergency care continued immediately on arrival at the military hospital, highlighting maritime rescue and healthcare readiness.
