The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has warned residents in parts of the city of an 18-hour interruption to water supply from 10 a.m. on Saturday 3 January to 4 a.m. on Sunday. The board said emergency repairs will be carried out on a major transmission pipeline that forms a primary source of the city’s treated water.

HMWSSB engineers will work on the 1600 mm diameter Phase-III main pipeline between Peddapur and Singapur under the Singoor project to repair detected leakages. The authority described the work as essential to prevent further damage and to secure long-term reliability of supplies. The repairs are expected to require a full shutdown of the affected trunk during the stated window.

Hyderabad water supply disruption: what residents should expect

Alongside the pipeline repairs, the Electricity department will undertake works at the Peddapur feeder near the 132 KV Kandi Substation. Authorities warned that the coinciding electrical works are necessary to ensure safe working conditions for crews and to facilitate the repair operation.

HMWSSB has not listed every neighbourhood that will be affected, but said the interruption will impact areas dependent on the Phase-III main. Hospitals, schools, small businesses and industries that rely on continuous water supplies have been asked to make contingency arrangements. The board has indicated that priority will be given to essential services where possible during the shutdown.

Residents are being advised to store an adequate supply of drinking water and to follow conservation measures during the outage. HMWSSB has also committed to deploying water tankers to severely affected zones and to keep the public informed on progress. Customers are encouraged to check the board’s official channels for updates and tanker schedules.

Engineers said the leak repairs will reduce the risk of future unplanned outages by restoring the integrity of a main transmission line that serves as a backbone of the city’s water distribution. While the disruption will be inconvenient, officials argued that carrying out planned emergency repairs now will lessen the likelihood of prolonged or recurrent failures in the months ahead.

Timely completion of the work will depend on site conditions and unforeseen challenges. HMWSSB has pledged to work through the night and to restore full service as soon as the pipeline and related electrical works are safe and stable. The board advised customers to report any acute supply or quality issues through its helpline.

Local administrations and community groups are preparing to assist vulnerable residents, and businesses that can operate with reduced water have been asked to stagger usage. The coordinated approach between the water board and the Electricity department aims to minimise disruption while enabling necessary infrastructure repairs to proceed.

For further information and updates, residents should consult HMWSSB notices and local media bulletins. The authority will release timing details for tanker deployments and any staged restoration plans as the repair work progresses.

Key Takeaways:

  • HMWSSB announces an 18-hour Hyderabad water supply disruption beginning 10 a.m. on 3 January for emergency repairs.
  • Work on the 1600 mm Phase-III main pipeline between Peddapur and Singapur will be carried out to fix leaks on a key supply line.
  • Electricity department works at the Peddapur feeder near 132 KV Kandi Substation will coincide with repair operations.
  • Residents are advised to make temporary arrangements; HMWSSB plans tanker deployment and staged restoration.
