New York’s newly elected mayor, Joharan Mamdani, has personally written a letter of support to Indian student activist Omar Khalid, who remains in custody in connection with the 2020 Delhi disturbances. The handwritten note, revealed after Mamdani took office on 1 January 2026, was penned while Khalid’s parents were visiting the United States in December 2025.

The letter, shared on social media by Khalid’s colleague Banojyotsna Lahiri, conveys solidarity and encouragement. Mamdani writes that he remembers Khalid’s message about resisting bitterness and offers condolences and support following a meeting with Khalid’s parents. The mayor’s personal engagement has drawn attention among diaspora communities and human rights observers.

Mamdani letter to Omar Khalid signals international attention

Officials familiar with the meeting say Khalid’s parents spent considerable time with Mamdani during their visit, discussing their son’s prolonged detention and its human impact. The visit coincided with family reasons, including the youngest daughter’s wedding, which prompted the parents to travel so their elder daughter could attend the ceremony in the United States.

Mamdani first publicly highlighted Khalid’s writings in June 2023 when he read excerpts of a prison letter at a New York event titled “Howdy Democracy”. At that time he criticised the extended detention without trial, noting that Khalid had been held for more than 1,000 days and that his bail applications had been repeatedly denied. Mamdani’s remarks then already drew public interest and the latest handwritten note has renewed discussion.

Omar Khalid was arrested in September 2020 and faces multiple charges under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. His case has been the focus of legal debate and protest, with campaigners arguing that prolonged pre-trial detention undermines due process. Indian authorities maintain that the charges relate to alleged involvement in violence and unrest.

The mayor’s direct intervention is notable because it represents a US municipal leader publicly engaging with a sensitive legal and political matter involving another country. While the letter expresses personal solidarity rather than an official policy position, it is likely to amplify calls from human rights groups and sections of the diaspora for legal clarity and expedited hearings.

Observers say such gestures can have mixed diplomatic effects. They can highlight human rights concerns and place pressure on judicial processes, while also prompting careful responses from national governments keen to avoid what they see as external interference in domestic affairs. For now, Mamdani’s note appears to be a personal act of support that has nevertheless resonated beyond New York.

As proceedings in Khalid’s case continue, the letter adds another dimension to public discourse around detention, due process and the role of international attention in domestic legal matters. Mamdani’s earlier public reading of Khalid’s prison letter, and his personal message now, ensure the case remains in the public eye both in India and among global observers.

  • Mamdani previously read portions of Khalid’s prison letter at a 2023 event and has criticised prolonged detention without trial.
