The newly elected leadership of the Niger Delta Students Union Government (NIDSUG) has pledged a renewed drive for peace and academic excellence across Nigeria’s oil-bearing region. In Port Harcourt, Comrade Chika Precious Uchechukwu, declared winner of tightly contested union elections, set out a programme of engagement designed to address youth restiveness and improve educational outcomes.
Niger Delta students peace initiatives
Uchechukwu said his administration will prioritise constructive engagement, sustained dialogue and targeted programmes to reduce youth restiveness — a condition he described as a barrier to schooling and regional progress. He told attendees that lasting peace is essential to learning and the long-term development of the Niger Delta.
“With a profound sense of humility, immense gratitude and a heavy responsibility, I accept the office of President of the Niger Delta Students Union Government,” he said. “We are not just students; we are the intellectual vanguard of a region brimming with potential yet beset by complex realities.”
Engaging stakeholders to secure opportunities
Uchechukwu outlined plans to engage university management, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and other stakeholders to secure scholarships, internships and improved infrastructure for students. The proposed interventions include advocacy for better learning facilities, expanded access to financial support and partnerships to deliver employability programmes.
He said the administration would move beyond lamentation to strategic, data-driven advocacy and would promote programmes to strengthen moral values, leadership and entrepreneurial skills among students. The approach aims to equip young people with practical tools to contribute to their communities and the regional economy.
Student welfare and inclusive governance
In addition to peacebuilding, the new leadership pledged to emphasise student welfare through inclusive governance and empowerment initiatives. The administration plans to implement measures that respond to the immediate needs of students while laying foundations for sustained academic improvement.
The election results were announced by Pastor Tanam Gospel, Chief Returning Officer for the NIDSUG polls, who declared Comrade Chika Precious Uchechukwu as National President in line with the union constitution. Alongside him, the national executive team includes:
- Onorhivwe Destiny, National Vice President (Administration)
- Assor Favour, National Vice President (Projects)
- Owonifa Josephine Tolulope, National Vice President (West)
- Ojikpong Alexander, National Vice President (North)
- Aighowamhi O., National Secretary General
- Sunyene Patrick Udofia, Assistant Secretary
- Wenibo Solomon Peaceful, National Treasurer
- Jackson Isuho Okon, Financial Secretary
- Frederick Bassey Ita, National Public Relations Officer
Observers said the commitments made by the new team reflect a growing recognition among youth leaders that peace, education and economic opportunity are interlinked. If delivered, the promised programmes could ease tensions, increase school retention and open pathways into employment for many young people in the Niger Delta.
For now, attention will fall on how quickly the NIDSUG leadership can translate pledges into concrete deals with the NDDC, the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and tertiary institutions. The new administration has signalled a willingness to work through established channels and to seek partnerships that benefit students across the region.
