Pangandaran in West Java attracted large crowds during the year-end holidays, with local authorities reporting a total of 359,123 visitors across six main destinations. The surge in arrivals brought a mix of beach recreation, water sports and inland sightseeing to the coastal regency.
Pangandaran tourism surge draws families and water-sport enthusiasts
Government figures show that Pantai Pangandaran was the main magnet, receiving 233,898 visitors, followed by Batukaras with 48,395 and Batuhiu with 25,337. Other popular spots were Karapyak (21,399), Madasari (19,612) and Green Canyon (10,482). The totals do not include visits recorded into January.
The attractions offered a range of activities. Many visitors enjoyed swimming and jetski rides, while others opted for banana-boat trips or all-terrain vehicle excursions. Local vendors and accommodation providers reported brisk business as holidaymakers booked rooms, purchased local produce and paid for games and transport.
Widaningsih, a 42-year-old visitor from Majalengka, said she had planned the trip for some time to give her family a break. Heavy rain on the day of their visit limited some outdoor plans, but her family still enjoyed water activities and an ATV circuit. She listed typical holiday expenses, including entrance tickets, food, lodging and local souvenirs such as salted jambal roti, terasi and clothing.
“The holiday is to please the family. I brought my parents and children,” she said. Entrance to Pantai Pangandaran costs Rp20,000 per person, while a small car pays Rp15,000 plus any parking fees.
The overall visitor count was provided by Sarlan, head of the Pangandaran Regional Revenue Agency. He described the holiday period as commercially important for the regency, with revenues from ticketing, parking and tourism services supporting local businesses and employment.
Local authorities also implemented traffic management measures at key sites to cope with the influx and ensure visitor safety. Such measures typically include staged entry points, parking controls and increased presence of officers near popular access routes. These steps aim to reduce congestion and maintain a smooth visitor experience.
Industry observers say the numbers signal steady domestic demand for coastal and adventure tourism within Indonesia. While international arrivals remain subject to broader travel trends, domestic tourism has proven resilient and continues to underpin local economies in regions such as Pangandaran.
Tour operators in the area noted that weather can affect the types of activities visitors choose. On rainy days, water sports operators may limit or suspend certain services for safety reasons, while land-based options such as ATV rides and horseback excursions provide alternatives.
Officials are expected to review the holiday period performance and use the data to plan infrastructure improvements and targeted promotions. By balancing visitor numbers with quality of service and safety, Pangandaran aims to sustain its appeal as a family-friendly coastal destination within Indonesia.
