Indian Drivers Use Risky Bonnet Fix to Navigate Zero Visibility Fog

A video circulating widely on social media shows a group of young men attempting an improvised method to navigate through extreme fog that reduced visibility to almost zero. The clip, recorded from inside a car and shared on X by user @Kapil_Jyani_, captures a passenger sitting on the vehicle’s bonnet and providing directions to the driver while the car moves slowly along an off-road track.

zero visibility driving India: what happened in the viral footage

In the short recording the vehicle moves at a crawl as the outside world is swallowed by thick fog. The person on the bonnet leans forward, calling out obstacles and guiding the driver where they believe the path lies. According to the post, the group were not on a main road but on an off-road route where landmarks and lane markings were not visible.

The clip has drawn thousands of views and wide reaction. Some users posted in a light-hearted tone, noting the ingenuity or the cold conditions, while many others criticised the stunt as reckless. Critics argued that placing a person on a bonnet endangers both those inside the vehicle and other road users, and that filming the episode to create viral content is irresponsible.

Social media response and safety concerns

Responses on the platform ranged from amusement to alarm. Several commenters highlighted the obvious safety risks: a sudden stop, an unseen obstacle or a shift in vehicle motion could throw the person from the bonnet or cause a collision. Others said that such behaviour normalises unsafe practices and might encourage copycat actions.

Road-safety advocates note that dense fog and ‘zero visibility’ conditions require conservative measures. Drivers are advised to reduce speed, use fog lamps and hazard lights, maintain a safe distance, and, where visibility falls below safe thresholds, to pull over in a secure location and wait until conditions improve. Experts also stress that off-road environments pose additional hazards, such as uneven ground or unexpected obstacles, that increase the risk of accidents.

Wider context and local impact

The video arrives amid a spate of similar local reports describing heavy fog affecting parts of northern India. Such conditions have in the past led to road closures and travel disruption. While the footage has become a talking point online, it underscores a recurrent problem for drivers in affected regions: how to balance the urgency of travel with the need for sensible precautions during poor visibility.

Law-enforcement and road-safety agencies routinely warn against reckless behaviour and urge motorists to prioritise safety. This viral clip has prompted calls from online users for clearer public messaging about safe driving practices in fog and for influencers to avoid posting content that might glamorise dangerous acts on the road.

As the debate continues online, the key takeaway from the footage is straightforward: improvisation that endangers people for the sake of convenience or online attention carries real risks. In conditions of zero visibility, the safest course is to stop in a protected place and wait for visibility to return rather than rely on risky ad hoc solutions.

Key Takeaways:

  • Video shared on X shows young men using a companion on the bonnet to guide a car through dense fog.
  • The incident occurred off-road in northern India during severe fog, creating near-zero visibility conditions.
  • Social media reaction mixes amusement with criticism, with many warning the stunt sets a dangerous example.
  • Road-safety experts stress safer alternatives such as stopping, using hazard lights and waiting for conditions to improve — highlighting broader concerns about zero visibility driving India.
