Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday virtually unveiled a statue of Raja Jagat Dev, a revered leader of the Buksa tribal community. The statue was installed at the village panchayat in Roshanpur Dalbaba in Gadarpur, within Udham Singh Nagar district in the state’s Kumaon region.

Mr Dhami described Raja Jagat Dev’s life as an example of sacrifice, bravery and devotion to religious and cultural values. He said the ceremony was intended not merely as a formal unveiling, but as an occasion to pay homage to the traditions and sacrifices of the Buksa tribe, which has communities across Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital and Kotdwar.

Buksa tribe Uttarakhand and cultural preservation

“Raja Jagat Dev dedicated his life to protecting religion and culture in the face of adversity,” the Chief Minister said. “This is not only a saga of bravery but a symbol of the indomitable power of self‑respect and faith.” He urged scholars and local institutions to conduct research into the leader’s life so that future generations might draw inspiration from his legacy.

At the ceremony, Mr Dhami outlined several government commitments aimed at improving local infrastructure and the welfare of the tribal community. Announcements included construction of a boundary wall, a tin shed, improved flooring and toilet facilities at the Shri Dalbaba Temple complex in Gram Sabha Roshanpur. The state also pledged to reconstruct two rural roads: a 3‑km stretch from Balramnagar to Khempur and a 4‑km section from Sitapur to ANK Inter College.

Officials present at the event included Block Head Jyoti Grover, Nagar Panchayat President Satish Chugh, Minister of State Manjeet Singh Raju, Udham Singh Nagar District Magistrate Nitin Bhadoria and Senior Superintendent of Police Manikant Mishra. The virtual unveiling was attended by local residents and tribal elders who welcomed the government’s focus on cultural recognition.

The state government has emphasised that its work on tribal welfare goes beyond commemorative gestures. Mr Dhami reiterated a broader agenda that includes cultural preservation, historical documentation, education, health, housing and employment for tribal communities. He framed the statue unveiling as part of a sustained effort to recognise and bolster the identity and welfare of the Buksa community.

Local leaders said the announcements will have an immediate practical impact, particularly the road improvements that are expected to enhance connectivity for residents and ease access to schools and health services. The planned upgrades to the Shri Dalbaba Temple complex are intended to preserve a place of religious and cultural importance and to support community gatherings.

Observers noted that while the event carried symbolic weight, follow‑through on the development promises will be decisive. The call for research into Raja Jagat Dev’s life was welcomed by historians and tribal representatives, who said careful documentation could help place the Buksa community’s contributions on the public record and inform targeted welfare initiatives.

With this unveiling, the Uttarakhand government signalled a renewed emphasis on recognising tribal histories as part of the state’s cultural fabric while committing resources to practical improvements in the affected areas.
